Bonjour! Some places are too good to be true, Château de Berne pt.1 (Provence, France)

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

When most people think of the southern part of France, they instantly connect this topic with the internationally renown film festival Cannes held in Nice, beaches in Saint Tropez, and Grace Kelly in Monaco. Moving away from the stereotypical links in our trip to Southern France, Provence, we decided to travel the unpopular roads to most tourist. Our first stop, Château de Berne.

Getting there

We all flew in separately to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport as this was the closest international airport from Flayosc, the town where the hotel was located. Other methods of transportations are available to the surrounding larger cities, via train, local flights, etc. But ultimately you will have to drive to the chateau or ask them for a pick up service.

Google maps will navigate your drive from the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport to Château de Berne at approximately 1H~1H 30M duration. But what Google still hasn't figured out is that once you enter the Chateau's vineyard premise, the roads are severely curved with pinhead turns and roads so thin that you have to slow down. So all in all, the average drive should lead up to 2H =D.

Once you enter the Chateau grounds, its instantly recognizable as you will find yourself driving through acres and acres of grape vines. Although we went during Fall, and no single grape was dangling, the sheer breadth of the vineyard was breathtaking.

Our view from the car overlooking the vineyard

Château de Berne

Located between Nice and Marseille, this 18th century private domain is the ideal setting for a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 star exclusive getaway. Nestled in the middle of an enormous vineyard, this luxurious private estate is owned by a Monaco-based English billionaire. Being so private and tucked away in Provence, there isn't much people around to photobomb your pictures. During our stay, which was low season, we had most of the facilities to ourselves. These rooms were so grandiose and well furbished, walking into each room was majestic.

Welcome to Château de Berne

Most known for their rosé wines, the reception offers you a glass each when checking in. A glass of chilled rosé is an easy to drink wine, compared to reds. A tour of their vineyard and wine making process is also available in their vicinity which I will make another post about.

Welcome to the Château de Berne

As you bask in the fresh Provence air, and take an eternal snapshot of the picturesque gardens, the two hour drive seems worth it. With your back to the hotel, this natural green view of is just the beginning of the facilities and the wonders of fauna this vineyard has been growing.

A view from the entrance of the hotel lobby

An example of their basketball court, which is surrounded by this great big tree hugging the hoop with its' falling leaves. This is how the French do so, they make everything seem so dreamy and romantic.

These green olive trees (as well as black ones) are planted around the hotel, which are then made into olive oil. In the morning, each hanging olive is showered as the morning mist passes by.

The Rooms

Step into the salon / bar that conjures up 'Downton Abbey.' The room acts as a waiting area during the day and at night, the fireplace lights up opening to a bar serving you cocktails till late.

This window filled room is the restaurant for the all too amazing breakfast, and also seconds as a Michelin awarded restaurant serving course dinner at night, Le Jardin de Benjamin. (A review of the breakfast to follow)

A closed area to the public, but we got a sneak peek as it was open. This kitchen is such a dream, as it has the biggest island table for baking.

Separate room for meetings/cooking classes

The lobby area and rooms are separately located on different buildings, in between is a courtyard and another domain where the owner resides during his stay (as mentioned by the hotel).

Although the rooms are simple, the patterns and the wooden furnitures are styles of the past uncommon in modern hotels these days.

Château de Berne should be an excursion to enjoy a laid back and private vacation, not suited for those who expect a wild night out ;).

I will be following with other posts on Southern France and the Château de Berne.
