Who is a sculptor? "Workshop of M. Anikushin" in St. Petersburg

A sculptor is a person who loves and knows how to create three-dimensional images of people and everything that he sees around. This image is called sculpture. Even with closed eyes, feel, we can recreate in imagination what the sculptor portrayed.

Workshops of many sculptors open the doors for all comers. A rare opportunity to see everything that happens in the creative workshop. Here, for example, the workshop of the famous sculptor Anikushin (1917, Moscow-1997, St. Petersburg).

The house was built in 1968-1969. The project was designed by the architect Philippe Gepner. This is an example of "rational architecture". The main task in the design of the building was the creation of a workshop for large-format models of monuments. The project was created taking into account the professional wishes of the sculptor.

The two-storeyed ivy facade made of red brick is the lower part of the building. On the oblique line from it rise up the side walls. The rear high one-story part with a huge window is a workshop. The building is surrounded by a garden.

image.png

Huge windows, the falling light from which enables the sculptor to imagine how his monument will look on the street.

image.png

A lot of adaptations, such as a design on which a multifaceted monument is gradually assembled from many details. The structure is movable. The master can examine all the details of the sculpture by turning the platform. And then push the construction forward, along the rails, to the huge window and climb up the ladder to the iron balcony, look at your creation from above.

Nearby - a huge pit for clay - ditch. There is also a whole story about how to work with this clay. Everything is not easy, everything requires knowledge. For a large sculpture you need a lot of clay, a few hundred kilograms, so there was always a large stock in the workshop.

image.png

There are small rooms for tools and workpieces. How much
The tools the sculptor uses can be seen on the stands.

Here are the huge "big gates" in the eastern and western sides of the building, through which materials were imported and the molded sculpture was taken out. Thanks to such dimensions and through passage the cargo transport freely entered and left the workshop room, all loading and unloading operations were carried out inside.

Hundreds of works of different scales and genres were created here - a monument to Lenin in Moscow, a monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad, a monument to Anton Chekhov in Moscow, and others.

Small (creative) workshop of Anikushin

This is his inmost, personal place, and also a workplace. Only friends were allowed here. Here the plans were conceived, which were embodied in the material. It was here that many sketches and variants of the future sculpture were created.

image.png

This is a cabinet, a library and even a museum, in which were kept casts from the famous Hermitage sculptures. Here everything is mixed - sketches, models, newspaper clippings, family photos. Here everything is real, surrounded by the master for many years of work in the workshop.

Anikushin and Chekhov

Almost thirty years the sculptor worked on the clay model of the monument to Chekhov, installed later in Moscow. The stands present the stages of work on the most famous sculpture of Anikushin. Working on this monument, the master literally lived the life of Chekhov. He studied his character, works.

"Anikushin's studio was filled with Chekhov's figures, he made almost two hundred variants and could not stop. It was the exactingness of a great master. Among the options, in my unenlightened view, were masterpieces, and Misha was looking for everything and was looking for something commensurate with his love for Chekhov. "Daniil Grani

This year in the studio of Anikushin there is the "Sculpture Laboratory" festival. Here you can see how the mountain of metal turns into an elegant piece. Here you can find out that clay or gypsum cools faster. To reveal the mystery - to whom portraits are more similar - to the model or to the sculptor himself. You can not only hear from what and how the sculpture is created, but also to see with your own eyes the weight of the process, participating in the master class.

From July to September (you still have time) in the workshop and on the adjacent territory are equipped working areas, where the sculptors create new works, from sketches to the embodiment in the material. Here, creative experiments are conducted, in which every visitor can participate, ask questions and even help the master in his work.

The sculpture workshop of MK Anikushin was given for life to the sculptor. After the death of Anikushin in 1997, the widow of the sculptor Maria Timofeevna Litovchenko, in a letter to the governor, asked to transfer the workshop to the Anikushin family. It was decided to leave the workshop in the ownership of the city and allow the sculptor MT Litovchenko to use it.
