Seven Star Park of Guilin

in #travelfeed6 years ago

Seven Star Park is a major attraction in the city of Guilin. We arrived in Guilin at noon, and after a bit of rest, there was just enough time to explore this beautiful park.

The Seven Star Park is home to the Seven Star Cave, an underground cave system with limestone formations. From the entrance of the park, we walked towards the centre of the park, where there was a stone staircase leading to the top of a hill. After passing through numerous caves (where some locals were playing mahjong) and traditional buildings, we finally reached the entrance of the cave. The only way to get into the cave is via official tours that departs every 30 minutes. Luckily, we manage to catch the last tour of the day.

The Seven Star cave is a massive underground cave system carved by ancient underground rivers with the cave ceiling reaching as high as 27 m and as wide as 49 m. The cave system has been a popular attraction since the Tang Dynasty, and during the Second World War served as a bomb shelter for the locals. Today, over 1km of walking track lead tourists to different stalactites and stalagmites formations. The cave is 20 degrees Celsius all year round, so it does feel a little chilly, almost like touring an ice cave. To make the limestone formations more dramatic, coloured light were shone through various part of the caves. It was as if we were wandering in some strange magical world.

To make the formations more interesting, they even go as far as naming different rock formations according to their shape, such as naming a formation that looked like three persons as “the sworn brothers in the peach garden” (A famous story in the Romance of Three Kingdoms). Sometimes you have to admire their imagination when they were naming these things.

Coming out from the cave, we continued to explore the rest of the park. The park has a lot of beautiful waterfalls, ponds, wooden bridges and traditional architecture, showcasing very well the essence of Classic Chinese style gardens. At one corner of the park there was a Buddhist temple, standing between large trees and underneath large rocky peaks in midst of the light rain. Very picturesque.

When we left Seven Star Park, it was already getting dark. Coloured lights on both side of the Lijiang River lights up the water beautifully. Guilin is a very picturesque city indeed!

That cave was really pretty with the coloured lights! And the gardens were quite impressive too. That would have been an awesome trip :)

goatsig

It was, especially it was the first trip alone with my wife after we had the kid. Now that he is older, it's not likely we will get a chance again until he is in his teens

That is awesome. It reminds me of a cave we visited at halong bay in Vietnam. They also use colored lights and name the formations. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for visiting. The colour lights really does make everything stand out. The names sometime you feel is ingenious, but sometimes you will feel like questioning the sanity of the person who names it
