✈ Have no money but want to travel? Check out my secret ways to cut costs by half!
Hey Steemians!
I hear from my friends very often that they dream of traveling but they do not have enough money.
Then I'm glad that I got a huge inheritance and I can flight around the world whenever I want! 😎
Well, ok - I cheat a bit.
I didn't get any inheritance, but I still travel.
You are probably wondering how this is possible?
I have a few rules that let me spend half the money I spent in my home country, Poland. Yes, more than half cheaper! Sometimes it is even ⅓ of my nominal budget.
So if you haven't worked out a bank robbery plan yet and you want to go around the world, I have something special for you! Something that will allow you to fulfill your dream of exploring exotic countries without stressing your credit card!
Today we will talk about the tricks that I have tested, improved and retested so that I can pass them to you!
15 RULES OF CHEAP TRAVELING
- The first and most important point is to find a reasonable destination.
This means that the best one is one where life is heavenly cheap and nature is amazing.
If you have more time and want to travel for more than a week or two, I recommend Asian countries.
You will find here very cheap accommodation, food, and other necessary things that are needed for everyday life.
For example, in Malaysia, where I am now, I pay from 2$ /RM 8 for meals for ALL DAY!
I would like to add that this is a tasty food and I do not starve at all!
However, if you only have a few days of vacation, more economical option is to choose a closer destination. Why?
Tickets will be much cheaper, which in general will be more cost-effective for you.
- Once you have chosen your destination, it is time to buy tickets.
If you have chosen cheap countries, tickets will be quite expensive, and vice versa.
However, you can always find them at a better price!
Look for low-cost flight offers on websites, follow facebook profiles and sign up for some newsletters!
Avoid direct flights, often those with changing are much cheaper.
And no, you won't need a fourth pair of shoes. - When you have a good offer of tickets, think about your luggage.
Remember that each piece of hold baggage (the larger one, which you send separately at the airport) is an extra charge (and more kilos to carry).
It is best to bet on minimalism and fit in the hand luggage for which you usually don't have to pay extra.
If you are flying with friends and you need more things, pack them up in a shared hold baggage.
- Do you want to spend less? Take more money!
This is not a joke, I am serious.
When you pack up, take a bunch of coins that will serve as gifts when you travel.
These small gifts will later make things easier and help to gain the sympathy of the local people. But how can you save money?
As a sign of gratitude for such a "gift for good luck" many times I received a free treat, another gift or a discount, not to mention a huge smile. :)
- Several personalities in one body? Why not!
Save money with promotions for new users when using portals like Airbnb or GrabCar (the Asian version of Uber).
For registration, you will receive additional benefits, for example on Airbnb - $25 USD for the first trip as a gift, if you spend $75 USD. Would you like to use this discount? Here is my ref www.airbnb.pl/c/seeitfeelitc.
- Sometimes you probably will need to use public transport.
To pay less for your tickets, don't just look for direct connections. Sometimes it is worth to change vehicle at some point along the way. In this way, you can save a lot of money if you choose a typical tourist destination.
Also check the prices for the different types of transport - buses, trains and ferries.
- If you rent a car or a scooter, pay attention to the police. (Yes, in the budget version renting is also possible. We paid for a scooter in Thailand about $4 USD per all day. )
If you look different from the locals, you can be almost sure that in the eyes of the police you will be riding wallet stuffed with dollars. 🤑
So when you see them on your way, change the course as soon as possible.
- Note: This is a hard version and not for everyone!
Ignore the police officers and go even if they want to stop you. You are only a distracted tourist, are you? 😉
We have used this method a couple of times, fortunately, the policeman preferred to focus on catching new white faces rather than chasing us.
- Dine and buy in places where you see local people.
Where there are locals there are lower prices, I think this does not need to be explained.
- Bargain with a smile! If you are at a market, you can always bargain for a lower price. Look in the eyes, smile, and you will certainly save a few dollars!
- Learn a few words that soften the hearts of the locals!
Local people appreciate very much those who respect their country and culture, so if you surprise them with their native language, they will be happy to offer you a special price.
- However, if you find a hard seller who doesn't want to give you a discount, you can ask them for a little gift. Probably he will be surprised by your negotiating skills and just will agree.
- Make friends with the local people and ask them to do some shopping for you.
Why should he do the shopping if you can do it yourself? Because the local people will usually pay much less than "tourists" do.
Don't forget to thank them with a coins, which you have just for such occasions.
- When you need to shop in a larger store and choose a product from the promotion, take a picture of the offer right away. At the cash desk, check if a discounted price has been charged, if not - show the picture. This will make communication easier if you face a language barrier and save you some money.
- Do not throw away the water bottle! Purchasing water may not be the biggest expense, but in warm countries, you will drink a lot and in tourist areas water may reach really high prices.
So look around for the vending machines that offer drinking water for a symbolic fee - you can fill your bottles cheaply and don't overpay.
What are your ways to prevent overpaying? Let me know in comments!
