Visit the Azores #2: Let's go to São Miguel [DE/GER]

After a long time of anticipation and preparations, we finally start our trip! We fly with the Azores Airlines within 4,5 hours from Frankfurt to Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores on the largest island of São Miguel.

We arrive at 5 pm local time at the small airport, the way to the hotel is uncomplicated. The airport is 5 kilometres from the city centre, which is about 10 minutes by taxi.
In the evening, we stroll along the streets of the old town, eat a snack in a rustic pub and go to bed early.

The next morning, we leave after breakfast in bright sunshine and explore the streets of Ponta Delgada.

We discover many churches and numerous beautifully paved squares, which make up the charm of the city.

Slowly, the cafés fill up with people enjoying a Galão together in the sunshine, the typical hot drink of the Portuguese.

An absolute must-do when staying in the capital are the park Jadrim Antonio Borges and the Palácio de Sant'Ana. The park is freely accessible and was originally set up by the pineapple farmer António Borges. Today the garden contains countless trees from all over the world and is very beautiful. Small caves and turrets made of lava rock invite to explore.

The Palácio de Sant'Ana is well maintained and also houses exotic plants. Here, we pay a small entrance fee and go on a discovery tour. In the middle of the park is an imposing building of the 19th century that is the regional seat of government of the Azores today.

Of course, we finish our city tour with a Galão in the sun.

In the evening, we go to the vegetarian restaurant Rotas da Ilha Verde for dinner. Incredibly delicious food, fresh and meatless ;-) Leave some space for a dessert! Our choice was an apple crumble with lime ice cream and a chocolate cake. A reservation is recommended.

The next day we fly to the flower island of Flores, where lakes, deep green forests and an unexpected adventure await us.

Nach langer Vorfreude und vielen Vorbereitungen geht es endlich los! Von Frankfurt aus fliegen wir mit den Azores Airlines in 4,5 h nach Ponta Delgada, der Hauptstadt der Azoren auf der größten Insel São Miguel.

Wir kommen um 17:00 Uhr Ortszeit am kleinen Flughafen an, der Weg zum sehr zentral gelegenen Hotel Do Colégio ist unkompliziert. Der Flughafen liegt 5 Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum entfernt, das sind ca. 10 Minuten mit dem Taxi.
Abends schlendern wir durch die Gassen der Altstadt, essen eine Kleinigkeit in einem urigen Lokal und gehen früh ins Bett.

Am nächsten Morgen ziehen wir nach dem Frühstück bei strahlendem Sonnenschein los und erkunden die Gassen von Ponta Delgada.

Wir entdecken viele Kirchen und zahlreiche schön gepflasterte Plätze, was den Charme der Stadt ausmacht.

Langsam füllen sich die Cafés, man trifft sich, um gemeinsam einen Galão in der Sonne zu genießen, das typische Heißgetränk der Portugiesen.

Ein absolutes Muss bei einem Aufenthalt in der Hauptstadt sind der Park Jadrim Antonio Borges und der Palácio de Sant’Ana. Ersterer ist frei zugänglich und wurde ursprünglich vom Ananaszüchter António Borges eingerichtet. Heute umfasst der Garten unzählige Bäume aus aller Welt und ist wunderschön. Kleine Grotten und Türmchen aus Lavagestein laden zum Erkunden ein.

Der Palácio de Sant’Ana ist genauso gut gepflegt und beherbergt ebenfalls exotische Pflanzen. Hier zahlen wir ein kleines Eintrittsgeld und gehen auf Entdeckungstour. In der Mitte des Parks befindet sich ein imposantes Gebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, das heute der regionale Regierungssitz der Azoren ist.

Unsere Stadttour beenden wir natürlich mit einem Galão in der Sonne.

Abends gehen wir im vegetarischen Restaurant Rotas da Ilha Verde essen: Unglaublich leckere Speisen, frisch zubereitet und fleischlos ;-) Lasst unbedingt einen Platz fürs Dessert! Bei uns waren das ein Apfel-Crumble mit Limetteneis und ein Schokokuchen. Eine Reservierung ist empfehlenswert.

Am nächsten Tag fliegen wir auf die Blumeninsel Flores, auf welcher uns Seen, tiefgrüne Wälder und ein unerwartetes Abenteuer erwarten.
