Visiting The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea, Wales

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

For the visitor to Swansea in south Wales in search of cultural enrichment there are not so many options.

One gem that stands out though is The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.

This gallery was opened in 1911 after local art collector and philanthropist Richard Glynn Vivian donated his collection of paintings, drawings and china to the city of Swansea with an endowment of £10,000.

The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is run by Swansea City Council, offers free entry and is open 6 days a week.

Glynn Vivian traveled extensively and his collection is an eclectic mix of pieces from many countries around the world.

As well as its permanent collection that includes a number of works by renowned artists such as Claude Monet, Augustus John, Paul Nash and Welsh artist Kyffin Williams, the Gallery puts on temporary exhibitions.

One ongoing exhibition during our visit was 'Swansea Stories'. This is a selection from the Gallery's permanent collection including 'Swansea Favourites'...

And 'Swansea People'...

One of the temporary exhibitions when we visited was of works by Frances Richards, wife of the painter Ceri Richards.

As well as paintings and drawings the collection included a number of interesting embroidery-collages...

The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is located on Alexandra Road (SA1 5DZ), just two minutes walk from Swansea Railway Station.

It is on a main bus route. There is limited on-street free car parking, and a paid NCP car park about 5 minutes away.

The Gallery is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm.

Entry is free.

I am not the kind who will visit art galleries during my holidays but these are some pretty nice pictures :)

I am not a big art person, but it was surprisingly interesting.

Beautiful review. What an amazing museum. Was the life size statue a sculpture?

It was made of sacking material, probably on a wire frame maybe.

Ah! I couldn’t tell. Interesting piece of art!
