The town of Mola di Bari (Italy): a fishermen's village and more (part One).
Hello,
Today I want to talk to you about of a small town on the Adriatic coast: Mola di Bari.
Mola di Bari is a small town in the municipality of Bari (in the Apulia region of Southern Italy).
Certainly, we cannot speak of a tourist destination when talking about Mola di Bari because locals live from fishing, table grape (that is also exported) and basic agriculture rather than tourist accommodation.
But in my opinion this town is particularly suitable for a "touch and go tourism" because Mola di Bari, besides an excellent food and wine tradition, also offers many sites of historical interest.
The recorded history of Mola di Bari begins with the building of the city wall, the Castle and the mother church dates back to the end of the 13th Century, but most likely the origins of the village are much older and date back to VII century B.C.
In fact, thanks to some recent findings scholars have been able to assume that Mola di Bari at the time was probably an ancient commercial port between Peucetii and Dalmatians.
It is very pleasant to walk through the narrow streets and sit at the tables of one of the cafes and restaurants on the waterfront.. and thanks to the great fishermen tradition, to eat an excellent meal based on fishes.
The fishing tradition in Mola di Bari is still strong and visible at every step. It won't be rare for you to come across fishermen, in particular elderly people, seeking to fix the nets of their boats.
It is a very old custom that since old time has defined the days of its fishermen.
It's the relationship between man and sea.. the love, loyalty and friendship that binds them.
Mola di Bari is particularly well-known for its ancient tradition in octopus dishes of every conceivable variety.
The Octopus Festival, which usually takes place in July, is an appointment between the Apulia summer's most anticipated.
It has quite a lot of visitors every summer, but has remained genuine to a great extent, as well as the locals.
For this I would call it a very attractive place to visit if you are looking for art, culture and really excellent food and wine.
However there are also "gems" to be found.. but I'll tell you about that on another post!
