My current home, Vigo, is the place to be around Christmas time! Known for its spectacular lights, people flock to the Galician city all throughout November, December and most of January to catch a glimpse.

You can find a range of accommodation here from cheap and cheerful hostals (basic hotels with private or shared rooms) to more upmarket hotels. You can find a lot of fancy ones on Garcia Barbon, the main business street. More affordable places can be found in the old town or outskirts of the city centre.

Those native to Vigo say the streets are rammed with people at this time of year which makes leaving the house a chore but I totally disagree. As a new Vigo resident I see it differently. The streets are buzzing with happiness from children and adults alike. Everyone is in the Christmas spirit. Friends and family are laughing together. Along Rua do Príncipe, which houses most of the high-street shops, kids can visit Santa's Grotto and take photos with toy reindeers and other festive delights. As you leave puerta del sol, Príncipe street can be found nearby.

Seeing the lights for the first time

If you are planning a weekend Christmas break in 2020, definitely add Vigo to your list. It's got such a charm which is only heightened around this time of year.

The first weekend when the lights are switched on is probably best avoided however any other weekend will do.

Check out areas such as Rosalia de Castro, puerta del sol, García Barbon, to name a few. The old town is also super charming as well as the park near the port which has a Christmas market all throughout the holidays. You can pick up some traditional Galician items and even some Christmas gifts. Near the markets you can take a ride on the big wheel which is of course lit up. However expect queues, especially in the afternoon and evening.

I definitely think I'll miss seeing the lights when life goes back to normal! They've brightened up those rainy winter nights considerably!
