Ostriches in Portugal

What? What am I talking about? Yeah, no kidding.
On my last trip across the country, a little road trip, I saw a lot of this ostrich farms. I don't know who and if you knew it at all, but it's becoming more and more trendy to buy ostriches in Portugal. Even on the islands of the Azores, on the mainland there are many ostrich farms, can you call it like that, Ostrich farms? These farms keep the ostriches like cows or sheep or horses, sometimes they are sharing the same field with the other animals.
Let's have a look at the background of this animal.

The ostrich or as this one is called in the professional language "Struthio camels", belongs to the ratites and comes from Africa, it is considered as the largest living bird on earth. Nowadays it is only found in the southern part of the Sahara, but that was different in the past, when the ostrich was also at home in Western Asia. Since the beginning of time, the ostrich has always been a hunting object for humans because of its feathers, meat and leather, which led to the extinction of the bird in many regions.

Now why is this animal also bred in Portugal?

The ostrich animal is now bred in Portugal, especially in the Alentejo area, because ostriches are quite easy to handle when bred by humans and can adapt wonderfully to extreme climatic conditions.

In Portugal, the meat of this bird is sometimes considered very delicate, me as a vegan I can't really say anything about that because I don't eat meat but I'm just surprised that something like this has apparently been in fashion here for a long time, first ostrich farm's were there around 2012, and is even gaining in popularity, while the vegan scene is thriving so slowly here.

Avestruzes em Portugal

O quê? Do que estou a falar? Sim, não me digas.
Na minha última viagem pelo país, uma pequena viagem de carro, vi muitas destas quintas de avestruzes. Não sei quem e se você sabia, mas está ficando cada vez mais na moda comprar avestruzes em Portugal. Mesmo nas ilhas dos Açores, no continente há muitas quintas de avestruzes, pode chamar-lhe assim, quintas de avestruzes? Estas quintas mantêm as avestruzes como vacas, ovelhas ou cavalos, por vezes partilham o mesmo campo com os outros animais.
Vamos dar uma vista de olhos ao passado deste animal.

O avestruz ou como este é chamado na linguagem profissional "Struthio camels", pertence às ratites e vem de África, é considerado como a maior ave viva da Terra. Hoje em dia só se encontra na parte sul do Saara, mas isso era diferente no passado, quando a avestruz também estava em casa na Ásia Ocidental. Desde o início dos tempos, a avestruz sempre foi um objecto de caça para os humanos, devido às suas penas, carne e couro, o que levou à extinção da ave em muitas regiões.

Agora porque é que este animal também é criado em Portugal?

O animal da avestruz é agora criado em Portugal, especialmente na região do Alentejo, porque as avestruzes são bastante fáceis de manusear quando criadas por humanos e podem adaptar-se maravilhosamente a condições climáticas extremas.

Em Portugal, a carne desta ave é por vezes considerada muito delicada, eu como vegan não posso dizer nada sobre isso porque não como carne, mas estou apenas surpreendido por algo assim estar aparentemente na moda aqui há muito tempo, as primeiras fazendas de avestruzes estiveram lá por volta de 2012, e até está a ganhar popularidade, enquanto o cenário vegano está a prosperar tão lentamente aqui.

Strauße in Portugal

Was? Wovon ich rede? Ja, kein Scherz.
Auf meiner letzten Reise quer durch das Land, einem kleinen Roadtrip, fielen mir verstärkt Straußen Farmen auf. Ich Weiss nicht wer und ob ihr es überhaupt wusstet, doch es wird immer trendiger in Portugal sich Strauße zuzulegen. Sogar auf den Inseln der Azoren, am Festland gibt es viele Straußen Farmen, kann man das so nennen? Diese werden wie Kühe oder Schafe oder Pferde dort gehalten, teilen sich manchmal auch mit den anderen Tieren das Feld.
Mal kurz zum Hintergrund von diesem Tier.

Der Strauß oder wie dieser in der Fachsprache heisst Struthio camelus, zählt zu den Laufvögeln und stammt an sich aus Afrika, er gilt als größter lebender Vogel der Erde. Heutzutage ist er nur noch im südlichen Teil der Sahara heimisch, doch das war früher anders, da war der Strauß auch in Westasien beheimatet. Schon seit Anbeginn der Zeit war der Strauß wegen seiner Federn, seines Fleisches und seines Leders immer schon ein Jagdobjekt für den Menschen, was in vielen Regionen zur Ausrottung des Vogels führte.

Warum züchtet man nun dieses Tier auch in Portugal?

Das Strauß Tier wird in Portugal, ganz besonders in der Gegend um Alentejo mittlerweile gezüchtet, denn die Strauße sind recht einfach zu handhaben in der Zucht durch den Menschen und können sich wunderbar den extremen klimatischen Bedingungen anpassen.

In Portugal gilt mitunter das Fleisch von diesem Vogel als sehr delikat, als Veganer kann ich da nicht wirklich mitreden, doch mich wundert es einfach, dass sowas anscheinend seit langem, ca. 2012 schon im Trend hier ist und an Beliebtheit sogar gewinnt, während die vegane Szene so schleppend hier gedeiht.
