Walk with me around Liverpool, UKsteemCreated with Sketch.

The photo, above, was our first view of Liverpool after we left the local train and were heading towards the harbour. Aren't these beautiful and elegant looking buildings? They say the city once rivalled New York in its importance.

Here's a tip: When you arrive in Liverpool by train, hold onto your ticket because it's good for the local train that takes you downtown. That will save you some steps.

We made two trips to Liverpool on my vacation. One was on a beautiful blue sky day when we took the two hour Magical Mystery Bus Tour about The Beatles. The other one was on a dreary day when we spent more time in the museum and gift shops. Both times, we visited the famous Cavern Club because it was so much fun. It seems there is always good entertainment at the Cavern and the drinks are reasonable.

I have enough photos of the tour and The Cavern for other posts. Today, we will see some of Liverpool around the waterfront and downtown.

The train trip between Manchester, where I was staying, and Liverpool is only 57 minutes. Interestingly enough, this was one of the first train routes in the world. I mentioned in a previous post that raw cotton from the USA came by ship to the port of Liverpool and was transferred by train to feed the mills in Manchester. There it was made into fabric, taken back to Liverpool and traded all over the world. Liverpool was the gateway to the world back then and the people of Liverpool are justifiably proud of their city. I loved this sign at the train station, above. You might enjoy my previous post too.

As we get closer to the Mersey River, you see the Ferry Terminal.

Head left and we will walk along the Mersey.

We crossed a small bridge and had to weave our way around some buildings that housed the museums.

Not yet tourist season and still a little cool out.

The Piermaster’s House was closed. Built in 1852, it was one of four houses originally built here and the only one left standing after WWII bombings. If you tour it, you will see what life was like during wartime. Who put that statue beside it? Now look behind you.

That's the inner harbour. It's pretty empty but for a few boats. Some are very colourful.

We walked along its edge looking into the shop windows and cleaning out the gift shop. If you didn't know The Beatles were from Liverpool, you sure found out by visiting one gift shop! Then around the corner...

More Beatles!

This is where we waited to catch the Magical Mystery Tour bus. Notice those cranes in the background. Just like Manchester, there seems to be much going on.

Two hours later, we returned from the tour and we're back in the general area we left. Lovely buildings - Liverpool does things on a large scale.

The Magical Mystery Tour bus dropped us off a block from The Cavern Club on 10 Mathew Street. On our own, the street was a little trickier to find but worth it. I hope I don't need to explain that The Cavern Club is called the birthplace of The Beatles.

Well worth it if you like The Beatles, British Invasion, and pubs!

Here is another ceramic tile covered pub.

They cater to other decades as well.

I promise to do an entire post on The Cavern Club, but right now we have to find our way out of here.

In the late afternoon, the shadows are long in the narrow streets.

And one last pub stop before we catch our train.
