Towns of Spain in Black & White: Chaorna, SoriasteemCreated with Sketch.

He is not mistaken who, resorting to poetry - with or without Machadian, Gerardian or Becquerian intention - qualifies this town in the Southeast of Soria as ‘a typical postcard village'.

Nor was the baker friend I met in Montuenga mistaken when he recommended to me -including a panoramic display on the mobile phone screen- a visit to the place. A beautiful and surprising place, in addition.

Some people think that the toponym Chaorna, refers to people of Basque origin, who settled in the place in the distant times of the Reconquest. Precisely that historical period -characterized by the everlasting give and take between Christians and Moors, advancing and repopulating some; molding itself, what a remedy! Chaorna still conserves a tower of Islamic origin, which for centuries belonged to the duchy of Medinaceli, as did the village, as well as a church -the church of San Miguel, which is the Archangel paladin of Christianity for a reason, and also the favourite saint of the knights of the cross paté- which conserves its plant in the shape of Tau, as a possible clue to the esoteric and mystical philosophy and conceptions of its builders.

The tower is located above the so-called Mora Cave - and although I do not know the reference, I would put my hand on the fire to imagine a tragic and at the same time charming legend associated with it - not far from the aforementioned church of San Miguel, whose curious structure is also sheltered on the same rocky promontory.

In reality, practically all the people find shelter among the sickles formed at this point in the Sierra de Solorio, although to this day no legend has come to my knowledge that, as in the Sickles of Duratón (Segovia), mentions the miraculous staff of a respectable and venerated saint as the architect of the prodigy.

In addition to the places mentioned, and the extraordinary panoramic view that can be contemplated, in Chaorna you can also visit the so-called cascade ravine and its peculiar fountain, located at the end of the village, whose spouts, also distributed in small waterfalls, as well as beauty, bring to mind a multitude of sensations, awakening, likewise, atavistic memories of villages that, like the Celts, venerated this type of places, situating in them beings of fantastic idiosyncrasy.
