Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, where the stone is Art
Spain is a country of ancient history, of miracles, of legends, of monasteries and of traditions where the stone forms an element of first order from an eminently cultural and artistic panorama.
One of the most mysterious and at the same time most surprising places in this sense, is the jacetano monastery of San Juan de la Peña.
San Juan de la Peña, not only has in its longevo one of the many associated traditions, in its foundation, with the miracle of a Marian apparition, but also, its legend is related to that emblematic 4th century in which the Goths captained by Alaric they took and looted a decadent Rome, giving beginning to a new cycle.
From there, San Lorenzo, a saintly martyr who is usually depicted with a grill, an instrument with which he was allegedly tortured, saved the Holy Grail, which for some would be the Sacred Chalice that Jesus Christ used at the Last Supper.
It was here, in this curious monastery, nestled in the very heart of an imposing rocky depression, where the Grail remained for centuries, until in the time of King Martin the Human, he settled in the cathedral of Valencia, where he continues today.
But here too an anonymous master stonemason, who is known as 'the Master of San Juan de la Peña' or 'the Master of Agüero', who put his particular mark on the splendid carved capitals of his magnificent cloister, knowing him very active for the zone of Jaca, Huesca and the Five Villas zaragozanas.
Concerning scenes from the Old and New Testaments, his characters possess a very singular beauty, characterized, mainly, by those eyes, of which Juan García Atienza -investigator of Magical Spain- called as 'a vision to infinity' and for its amazing candidness.
The details of the Holy Supper are remarkable, where Judas tries to hide a fish, ictis or symbol of Christianity, the resurrection of Lazarus or the murder of Abel, where the blow that hits him in the head, his envious brother Cain, is appreciated.
San Juan de la Peña, place where the kings of the Crown of Aragon also rest, is located a few kilometers from the beautiful and picturesque town of Santa Cruz de la Serós
