A Place To Remember - Douglas, Wyoming - The Self Proclaimed "Home of the Jackalope."

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

We finally finished our stint in Culbertson, Montana doing the sugar beet harvest (I'm still working on my video "We Be Droppin Dem Beets.") and have settled down for the month of November in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Our travels took us through a couple of small towns and one of them in particular has a story that I found somewhat interesting. We stayed a night in the sleepy little town of Douglas, Wyoming which boasts being the home of the worlds first Jackalope. . Created by taxidermist Douglas Herrick in the 1930's from the carcass of a jackrabbit with deer antlers grafted on. The creation was then sold to a local hotel in Douglas. One thing is for certain, the people of Douglas are mighty proud of their claim to fame and you can find representations of the mythical beast all over town.

Yes, that's a big a$$ jackalope statue on the hill in the distance.

They had no less than 10 in the campground office that we stayed at (I didn't take any pictures, when will I learn?).

I did manage to catch a photo of this cute little jackalope who was still so young his antlers hadn't grown in yet.

The campground we stayed at had a small field behind it where the owner had some horses and we met this cool guy named Asiago who took a liking to my beard. Thankfully the horses in Douglas do NOT have antlers.

A few words of caution if you're ever traveling through Douglas, Wyoming. Do not make any disparaging remarks about the jackalope or you just might piss off the entire community of 6000+ folks. Don't let this be you.
