Do you want to learn more about one of the greatest and the largest royal palaces in Korea? about Gyeongbokgung?

So, if you visit Gyeongbokgung you definitely should watch the performance of changing of guard shifts. It happens 2 times a day. The first change of guard takes place in the morning at 9:35 AM and the second is 4 hours late, at 13:35.

The Kwanghwamun gate was used only by the king himself. Through the eastern and western gates, high-ranking officials entered the palace. And the servants of the palace used the northern gate.

For foreign visitors, the entrance to the palace is paid. An adult ticket costs about 3 dollars. But palace does not work every Tuesday.

The Gyeongbok Palace was totally destroyed during the Imjin War (Japanese occupation). During the war, the king and his family had to leave the palace. They moved to another palace which name is Toksugun. The Gyeongbok palace was empty for almost 3 centuries. And only under King Gojong by the end of the XIX century the palace was restored and again became a residence of the royal family.

The Imjin War (1592-1598) is the Japanese annexation of Korea. This war takes an important place in the history of Korea because it destroyed a huge number of important cultural and historical places, and many people died during these 6 years of the war.

However, in 1911 the Japanese army again attacked Korea and they entered Seoul, and Gyeongbokgung again suffered. Almost all buildings were destroyed, out of 330 buildings only a few left.

Should we enter the palace now? Let's look around the palace from inside, and look at those structures that have survived till our days and were reconstructed.

The palace is always crowded. Because it is one of the top attractions in South Korea and of course, all tourists are coming here.

The continue of the tour around Gyeongbok palace you can read here.
