DTube - Camping Inside a Volcano in Bali
I am an outdoorsy person. I don't mind sleeping in nature, like the beach I slept on in Nicaragua. And I really like camping, as long as my toes are not stiff from the cold like they were in the mountains of California.
I have actually camped a total of 3 times in Bali. The first time was at a lake in the mountains. The second time on a beach near Uluwatu. This camping adventure was the best of them for location. I got to camp INSIDE an inactive volcano but right next to an active one.

I have local friends in Bali that like to do a lot of activities and camping is one of them. They love it when their foreign friends join them so they begged me pretty hard to go with them. I agreed. They knew of a place near Mt Batur, the 2nd highest mountain in Bali and a popular one for tourists to climb.
So that weekend we rented tents and sleeping bags and drove out from Denpasar up through Ubud, where we stopped to eat at 9 Warung, a restaurant where you serve yourself and pay what you want or pay for a voucher for someone else. Be sure to clean your own dishes too.
We drove further north to Mt Batur. What I didn't realize until I got there is that Batur is an active volcano but it is completely surrounded by another volcano which is inactive. Quite a few people live and farm inside the inactive volcano, probably because the soil is rich in nutrients.
Overlooking the valley in the volcano
We got to this random farm and stopped. I was like, "This is it? We're staying with these people?" We grabbed our stuff and walked around the onion patch and set up our tents there. Once I saw the viewpoint next to the tent spot, I understood. We had a breathtaking view over the valley and looking directly at Mt Batur. The sunset we were blessed with was amazing too.
We built a campfire and we paid the locals to deliver us some food and beer. Unfortunately, no marshmallows this time but I love eating around a campfire.
I woke up for the sunrise which was even better than the sunset the night before. It was rising next to Mt Agung, the largest mountain in Bali. I captured the best photo I've ever taken of a sunrise.
Where is the coolest place you ever camped?

This was a great story guided by good photos. Man, living inside an unactive volcano surrounding an active one?! That's wild, and beautiful. Very nice post man!
Thank you, Jordan. I guess whenever the volcano does act up, it isn't too life-threatening. The people there are great, though.
@daveonarrival a farm inside volcano? 😳
Seeing this made me want to go back camping for the coming holy week.
Beautiful landscape of Bali specially the sunrise, stunning 😍
Make it holy camping.

haha. Yeah, thanks.
Omg your friends sound awesome!!! Those are the kind friends I wanna meet here! Dope! I HAVE to do this!!!! THIS IS THE COOLEST!!!!!!!
Um...hm...I think maybe the coolest place for me wasn't a volcano. But I slept with some homeless people in Florida Keys and I thought that was kinda cool lol. I didn't end up on the beach though because I heard there's hella sand flees.
They showed me a secret rooftop where they sleep lol
Well that sounds like it'd be a very interesting blog post. Sleeping on a roof in the Keys...
I met them through Couchsurfing! There is a very active community there. They do meetups every week. Check it out.
