Located in Phelan, California, about an hour's drive outside of Los Angeles, lies a nice building surrounded by animal cages accessed only by dirt road. It almost looks like a petting zoo, only the animals here are a bit too feral to safely let the kiddos go petting them. We're not talking about goats here either. More like the kind with big claws and teeth to match. But it is certainly a family friendly place and something I highly recommend families do if they are in Southern California. While I am not a family travel creator (Steem is my family 😉) I did collaborate with a family travel vlog, Look Who's Blogging, and my friend Todd Hata in partnership with Forever Wild to bring this video to you to tell you about the project and raise awareness of the exotic animal industry. Plus I got to feed tigers which is the kind of adventure that's right up my alley. 😄
To begin, Joel, the founder of Forever Wild, gave us a private tour of the whole place. He explained that he rescues these animals from Fish & Wildlife departments, animal controls, and private owners. When animals can't be returned to the wild because they wouldn't survive, and when zoos won't take them in, most of them are put down. Joel accepts as many of these animals as he can with the facilities he has so that they can live out their lives in a caring home.
Joel showed us the reptile room with about a dozen venomous snakes and only a couple nonvenomous ones. He showed us a bunch of exotic birds, monkeys, more reptiles including alligators and turtles... singing dogs... Did you know there is a type of dog that sings? You do now.
What else?... A sloth that would make Kristen Bell have a meltdown. A black bear. And cats. Big cats. HUGE cats. From servals to a lioness to a leopard to a black leopard to several different tigers. Beautiful, majestic tigers. The rest were amazing too but I think tigers are the most amazing and beautiful of them all.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? TIGERS! Duh! Haven't you heard? They're GRRRRRRREAT!

Speaking of Frosted Flakes, when you visit this sanctuary you have the option to FEED the tigers! It's like my whole life and bearded face and cat-like reflexes have led up to this moment! Okay, that's exaggerating, but it is kind of a dream come true for me to get up close to tigers. Feeding them is just the Frosted Flakes on the cake (if that's not a thing yet, it should be). Icing is overrated. We fed them raw chunks of meat on a stick, cuz obviously the best way to eat meat is on a stick. Just ask Thailand. And now I really want satay... I feel like I'm getting off topic.
