Discover Serbia No2 - Danube River on northwest part of Serbia (Apatin)
This is my second travel post on Discover Serbia series. This time it futures Danube river on the beginning of it's flow through Serbia.
Danube river is the second-longest river in Europe and it flows southeast for 2,860 km pasing 10 different countries. The river ends in the Black Sea. Some of the bigger cities build around it include Ulm, Regensburg in Germany; Linz, Vienna in Austria; Bratislava in Slovakia, Budapest in Hungary; Vukovar in Croatia; Novi Sad and Belgrade in Serbia. Landscape and nature along the Danube River in Serbia varies from low to hilly and wild canyons, creating the most magnificent scenes. The forests, meadows and river banks of the Danube are habitats of many rare plant and animal species.
Why did I went on this trip? Well my good friend Nikola from Apatin moved away to Canada and he was home after 3 years so a visit was a must. He loves nature so most of the time we were exploring beautiful nature around Apatin.
Danube was quite low this year so there were lot of sand beaches, and you could walk almost to the half of the river.
Apatin is located at northwest border of Serbia on the left bank of the Danube river (natural border with Croatia). Town population is around 17.000. If you ask anyone in Serbia about Apatin they will answer Jelen Beer :) It is one of the oldest and biggest breweries in Serbia founded in 1756.
Near Apatin you can find Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve. It's a large protected area of wetland that includes vast forests, meadows, ponds, swamps and the Danube's meanders.
One of the best parts of it is an old riverbed of Danube. The riverbed changed but it left a lake. You can rent a small boat with paddles (motorboats are forbidden) and spend whole day exploring it. it is a zen like experience.

thanks. i am sorry to hear you could not visit Serbia for such a stupid reason. there is plenty to see, and there are many places in nature that are yet not commercialized so you can feel the nature.

I also think about following the danube towards south-east one day. Which time of the year would you recommend? ..regarding the mosquitos I guess it's better not to start too late..
thanks. my guess is late May or June. mosquitos can be crazy :) I was there like 6-7 years ago in the half of november and there were hordes of them. this was taken 17-20 october and there were no mosquitos (we had no rain for almost whole summer.
End of the Danube in Serbia is also beautiful. it is totally different scenery. i hope i will visit it this year.
That's such a peaceful place! Danube River in the part of Romania is not so accessible .. really love the way it looks like in Serbia :)
yes the part in Vojvodina is like peaceful big slow river with lots of forest around.
