The Dragon of Dundee

Be warned for at the far end of the world in the city of Dundee, lies a Dragon!

You can see this chap when visiting Dundee's City Centre.

The Strathmartine Dragon is statue of an old medieval tale about a dragon which the locals managed to smash its head in with a big stone... Typical of Scots, whilst the English would have sent Knights to slay the dragon, the Scots groupef together and bashed its head in!

The tale goes that a brave hero and a mob of people drove the dragon north to Strathmartine (north of Dundee) and surrounded it. Martin, urged on by cries of 'Strike, Martin' (Martin was also probably trying to impress some wench), then clubbed the mighty beast.... A beast that many today believe was an Elk. But the dying creature managed to crawl away to the spot where the 'Martins stone' now stands (in a farm at the edge of Dundee which most people cannot get too).

the Elk/Dragon was again surrounded and finally slain by the young hero. Its dying words were:

‘Tempted at Pitempton

Draigled at Baldragon

Stricken at Strathmartine

And killed at Martin’s Stane.’

Chances are it's last words were either "eeeeeeeeek", or something like "what ye doin ya wee lanky bastard! Eh was just going for a wander and ya bashed me heed in ya bampot, can a dragon nae be left alone in peace nae more!"

R.I.P Strathmartine Dragon, got your head bashed in whilst taking a gentle walk! :(
