🎬 Mammoths of Zoological Museum in Saint Petersburg

Being in St. Petersburg, I visited the local zoological museum. The museum is the oldest on the territory of Russia. The total number of exhibits exceeds 30 thousand.

Of particular interest is its Mammoths collection.

1. Mammoth Dima

The find was made in 1977 in the upper reaches of the Kolyma River, in the territory of the Magadan Region (Russia). Later it turned out that the exhausted child fell into a pit with water and choked. The growth of the calf was 98 cm, weight - about 70 kg, age - about 7 - 8 months. Radiocarbon analysis showed the age of the find - about 40 thousand years.

2. Yamal mammoth

This Mammoth was found in 1988 on the bank of the river Yuribeteyakha, which flows into Ob Bay. This is a female, at the time of death it was 2-3 months old. The baby still fed on mother's milk. A lacerated wound was found on the leg , perhaps it caused the death of the mammoth. The age of the find is about 39 thousand years.

3. Adams Mammoth

The skeleton was found by a hunter in the Lena River delta in 1799 but only in 1806 its excavation began. The botanists delivered a skeleton to Saint Petersburg, where it directed the "assembly" of the skeleton. The skeleton of the Adams Mammoth is the first full skeleton of a mammoth, which turned out to be in the hands of scientists. The age of the mammoth is about 36 thousand years old.

4. The Berezovsky Mammoth

In 1900 the remains of the mammoth were discovered by the hunter Semen Tarabykin on the bank of the river Berezovka. In 1901 the expedition of the Academy of Sciences arrived in the place.

At the time of death, the male was 45-50 years old. Apparently, he broke off the cliff and died.

The exposition reproduces excavations - in this position the Berezovsky mammoth has been found. Radiocarbon analysis showed the age of the find - about 44 thousand years.
