Zanzibar. A day in prison.

in #travel7 years ago

The morning of a new day on Zanzibar brought another dawn of awesome beauty.

Traditionally making a couple of dozen photos, I went to the restaurant for breakfast, after which we again rented a minibus and sat down in it in anticipation of our driver. It did not take long to wait, and the merry fellow took the wheel:

We again headed to the city of Zanzibar, only this time not to its old part of Stonetown, but to the pier. Along the way, I made several shots of local public transport:

The time passed unnoticed, and here we are again in the largest city of the island. At the pier, our Russian speaking guide was already waiting for us, who prudently found a free boat. Together loaded into a small boat, we sailed towards the island with very unusual inhabitants.

Our young captain:

Although we were to sail a short distance, but along the way there were small boats and large ships, which, as I then decided, went to the port of Dar es Salaam:

After some half an hour, we reached our destination:

The plate says that we swim to the island of Changuu, which the locals call Prison Island.

In ancient times, this island was under the control of Arab slave owners. Later, with the arrival of the British, he passed under the control of the British, who built a prison there. It is worth noting that not a single prisoner ever visited this prison.

Now on this island is a chic hotel with a shaken pool and sea views:

But the island is not remarkable not for the hotel, but for its inhabitants. Here live hundreds of Seychelles turtles! In the early 20th century, the British governor of the Seychelles sent a few specimens of giant turtles, which began to multiply rapidly. Later, their population declined due to the fact that the local began to hunt them. Now this kind of turtles is on the verge of extinction, therefore to their cultivation approach very responsibly.

Of course, we fed the turtle:

On the shell of each tortoise her age is written. For example, this little girl is 127 years old:

The island is full of other animals. Peacocks here are more than chickens at the grandmother in the village, and monkeys are so used to people that they are not afraid of them at all:

By and large, there is nothing more to look at, but to our surprise it has been several hours of our stay on the island, which means that it's time to leave.

While we sailed from the island, I took a few photos:

This concludes our excursion Zanzibar. It was, albeit very short, but very interesting and full of local color.

As I later learned, there are several excellent places for diving and snorkeling around the island, which I suddenly got carried away with in one of my Egyptian trips. If I knew about their existence, I would definitely take the opportunity. Well, okay, there will be an excuse to come back here!
