Traveling... Turtles conservation 🐢. Margarita Island, Venezuela.
Hey there! This time I want to share with you a trip I made to Margarita Island, Venezuela, as a volunteer for a turtle conservation program. The first thing I can tell you, is that this is amazing. You can not imagine the immense emotion you feel when you have the honor of being close to this unique animal!
But... beyond the emotion that I felt on a personal level, and apart from the beauty that these photos are seen, the important thing is to know the meaning of all this. The sad reality is that sea turtles are in danger of extinction, and the main cause is human, either indirectly by trawling, being entangled in nets, or because their eggs are considered "a delicacy", or being fished to use their shells to make various articles, or simply because of the pollution that exists on the beaches, which does not allow them to spawn (lay eggs), or the very contamination that exists in the sea.
There are turtles protection programs, which clean the beaches so the turtles can pass and find a good place to spawn. They are non-profit organizations that accept volunteers to conduct rounds of surveillance, so once a turtle is visualized, they can isolate the place where the animals lay their eggs (nests) so that no one step on them, and also to have a control, to identify to which species the turtle belongs, the day and the hour in which the eggs were placed, and the approximate time of birth can be calculated.
According to statistics, it is estimated that only one in every 100 turtles that are born, survives to adulthood. Is not this scary? Do not you feel like making a change?
These first photos are on the ship, on the outward journey ...
When we arrived at Margarita Island...
And to what we came... Let's work!
