HOTEL CONGRESS IN TUCSON and the arrest of JOHN DILLINGER and gang, 1934. Photos and history!
Hello my Steemian friends. Let's take a look at the famed HOTEL CONGRESS in downtown Tucson, Arizona. I have been there many times in my 9 years enjoying Tucson and the great southwest. I take pleasure in witing of the many historic sites I have visited. And, the Congress Hotel is loaded with history.

Above see the hotel in the early 30's and today. When you see the following photos you will see they have kept it just like the old days. It is a hppenning place. The rooms are dated to the Dillinger days.
See the actual photo of the 1934 fire that "flushed out" his gang members on the third floor. They then located dillinger and mistress in a small private home on 2nd street a couple of miles away.

Every year The Congress Hotel holds "Dillinger Days". See the phoito of the reenactment. It is so worth seeing if In Tucson in the spring.
above (google images) is the rented home where Dillinger hid out and was captured. It stands today and in use.
Three Dillinger gang mambers, the most famous, Harry Pierpont stayed one night in the hotel. Dillinger remained in the house on second street. Fire broke out and the gang gave a fireman 12.00 (a lot of money in 1934) to make sure the luggage was safe. It was unusually heavy and one of the fireman recognized a face of a gangmember from "Detective Magazine". the rest is history. the cops came, arrested and were tipped of as to the whereabouts of Dillinger.
Dillinger thought he'd hide out in Tucson in the boondocks to escape the "heat" on him in the east as well as Chicago.
He escaped from prison in Indiana and on July 25, 1934 was gunned down exitting a theater in Chicago by Melvin Purvis detective in a gun dual, ruled justifiable homicide. Purvis gained a lot of fame.

Cool Post! Love the history you share.
much appreciated.
Interesting history = ) Does this hotel still exist ? Do they share the history of the hotel with their visitors ? Prison escapes were a thing even in the past. I wonder if there is an explanation how he escaped the prison ?
