The Driftless Area: Travel Slice 2 - Decorah to Waukon
My Morning Commute
My town of residence and primary town of work are named after the same American Indian--although Waukon (pronounced "wok-KHAN") claims the namesake is his son--a Ho-Chunk warrior and orator during the Black Hawk War.
Here is a glimpse of my drive from home in Winneshiek County to Allamakee County, Iowa.
The southeastern portion of the crater wall.
The local rock company's lot.
Heading up out of the crater.
A small plane landing at the small airport as I head up on the highlands.
Big sky, rolling land, and the corn reaching upwards.
If you look closely, you can see the town's sign.
Rolling into town on another long, straight road.
The giant cowboy and bull at Sweeney's Farm & Home Supply. A little further on is the alleged cheese curd capital of the WORLD.
Small town, USA? You bet! This is also the only stoplight in Allamakee County.
Here I tried to capture a street that looks like it stretches to the edge of the world, but there's a flatter town for that in a future post.
BONUS
On my way home I snapped a nice one of Waukon Feed Ranch ...
... and more big sky.
