Real Life Captured #126: Montevideo Uruguay! Part Four (11 Photos with Travel Pro Captions!)

in #travel6 years ago

Hey there my Steemit friends! In this "Real Life Captured Series" I do my best to bring you exactly that; the real life captured from destinations all around the world! After eleven years of travel experience my favorite thing to do is walk around! That's right, I simply like to go to foreign countries and walk around. I observe (and now photograph) the people, food, culture, and way of everyday life and bring it to you in this "Real Life Captured Series".

Here we find ourselves in Montevideo, the Capital of Uruguay. It's a small country, with a population of only about three and a half million. They have a very warm and European culture. The people were friendly, the streets were clean, and the food was very good! I felt welcome here and it is a place I would consider coming back to.

Uruguay considers themselves like the brothers of the Argentinian people. A total independent country yet very similar to their neighbors. One thing that separates them from Argentina is their love for Yerba Mate, an herb drink that is packed with caffeine. They drink twelve kilos of this per person per year! While their neighbors north in Southern Brazil, and to the west across Rio De La Plata, Argentinia drink about half that.

So if you you are wondering what some of the special cups and straws are and the thermos people are carrying around, it's all about the Yerba Mate! Besides that, the over all vibe of Uruguay is not very Latino, it's much more European. Even the people have no indigenous genetics and are almost entirely of Italian and Spanish decent.

Another thing that separates them from Peru to Mexico is they speak a dialect of Spanish that really screwed me up! I had no problem communicating in other Spanish speaking countries but once I got to Uruguay they could understand my textbook Spanish, but I could often barely figure out what they were saying. Anyway, let's get into these photos and have a look around. Let's Go!

You can find great old world European Architecture all over this city.

People here like to go fishing alongside the board walk. The city is like a small peninsula with Rio de La Plata emptying out into the Atlantic on one side and the Atlantic Ocean itself on two other sides. Argentina is on the other side of the river.

More people fishing.

That is some prime real-estate, yet the building is all boarded up! Across the street is the ocean.

This is the actual port of Montevideo.

The only trees on the block!

You can find these old canons randomly around the entire city near the water's edge.

You are here!

This one is outfitted with wheels!

It's just another street in Montevideo Uruguay! It's a great walking city but you can take the bus if you're in a hurry.

With over 11 years of travel experience I answer travel and international lifestyle questions. Leave a question in the comments and I may make a Steemit post just for you!
