Flinders Ranges- Gladstone a small rural town in the mid north of South Australia
Welcome to Gladstone
Gladstone is located in the Flinders Ranges, in the Mid North of South Australia, 209kms North of Adelaide. The township was named after the British prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone. The township was established in 1872. Gladstone has a population of approximately 750 people.
The town’s rich heritage consist of farming, railways, military and the famous historic Gladstone Gaol.
Gladstone has a service station, medical centre, caravan park, churches, hotels and a post office
The Gladstone goal
The first prisoner sentenced to Gladstone goal, Charles McCarthy, arrived on June 8, 1881.
The Gaol accepted both male and female prisoners. It closed as a correctional facility in 1939 to become an internment camp during World War II. In 1941 it re-opened as a detention facility for males aged 18 to 22 and closed again shortly after. The gaol re-opened in September 1952 with the aim of reforming young offenders. In 1975 the gaol closed once more. Today it is a popular tourist attraction. It's open to the public 7 days a week. They provided a self guided tour and a guided tour. For those with an interest in the supernatural there is also a ghost tour.

During World War II, an Inland Aircraft Fuel Depot was established near Gladstone. The depot was one of 31 fuel depots established in remote places across Australia.

Gladstone is now the location of the largest inland grain facility in Australia, storing wheat, barley, durum wheat, peas, and beans.
Gladstone is also home to the drink manufacturer "Trend drinks" which began back in 1876
