El Petit Costumé

Las clases burguesas y aristocráticas de principios del siglo XX, comenzaron a veranear en el norte de España . San Sebastian, Zarauz , etc se llenaron de personajes adinerados que cuidaban mucho su indumentaria. Este vestuario de verano, muy ligero y fresco, de colores claros es lo que se conoce por “Petit Costume”.
Sorolla, amante y conocedor profundo de la moda, aprovechó para pintar estas escenas veraniegas y jugar con los matices y reflejos que el sol imprimía en esta indumentaria “pija” de la época. Muchas veces fue su familia la que le sirvió de modelo.
Estas playas eran totalmente distintas a las que conocía Joaquin del mediterráneo en las que los niños de los pescadores se bañaban desnudos.
Los tejidos del Petit Costumé eran frescos: lino o algodón y se usaban colores suaves y claros. Hay que tener en cuenta que estos trajes no se los quitaban ni siquiera en la playa, sino que permanecían allí vestidos, bajo la sombra de sombrillas, toldos o casetas. La playa era para pasear y para contemplar, no para bañarse. Allí leían o pintaban y pasaban sus jornadas estivales las clases mas acaudaladas de principio del siglo XX.
La exposición de “Sorolla y la Moda” que está teniendo lugar en Madrid es una visita muy recomendable. Podréis ver estos trajes de cerca junto a los cuadros que pintó este valenciano ilustre que a mí me encanta.

The beach was for a walk and to contemplate, not to bathe. There they read or painted and spent their summer days the more affluent classes of the early twentieth century.
The exhibition of "Sorolla and Fashion" that is taking place in Madrid is a highly recommended visit. You can see these costumes closely together with the paintings painted by this illustrious Valencian that I love.
