Pocos madrileños conocemos nuestra ciudad mientras que somos capaces de ilustrar a fondo sobre otras ciudades. Así que decidí ir a conocer nuestra Catedral.

Few of us from Madrid know our city while we are able to illustrate about other cities. So I decided to go to our Cathedral.

Es un templo católico. El acceso es gratuito.
Una de las catedrales españolas terminada mas recientemente. De hecho se consagró en 1993 y lo hizo el papa Juan Pablo II. Por lo que el único templo español consagrado por un papa

It is a Catholic temple. Access is free.

Es el lugar de celebración de actos reales: la boda de Felipe VI con Letizia Ortiz. Pero también en ella se han celebrado los funerales de estado a los expresidentes Adolfo Suarez y Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo.

La historia de esta Virgen es la siguiente. La imagen de la virgen fue descubierta en la muralla existente, una vez la abandonaron los árabes. Por eso se llamo de la Almudena.
Entonces se edificó una pequeña iglesia en el año 1085 por el rey Alfonso VI y que tuvo que destruirse muchos años mas tarde por razones urbanísticas, para ampliar la calle Mayor.
La reina Maria de la Mercedes era muy devota de ella e impulsó su construcción en el reinado se de su marido el rey Alonso XII, comenzando su construcción en 1885.

The story of this Virgin is the following. The image of the virgin was discovered in the existing wall, once abandoned by the Arabs. That's why it's called the Almudena.
Then a small church was built in the year 1085 by King Alfonso VI and it had to be destroyed many years later for urban reasons, to expand the main street.
Queen Maria de la Mercedes was very devoted to her and promoted her construction in the reign of her husband King Alonso XII, beginning its construction in 1885.

El proyecto arquitectónico ha sufrido muchas modificaciones desde su idea inicial que pretendía ser el proyecto neomedieval mas importante de España. Se reimpulsó su construcción con el apoyo de gobiernos socialistas en 1984, curiosamente.

The architectural project has undergone many modifications since its initial idea, which was intended to be the most important neomedieval project in Spain. Its construction was reinvigorated with the support of socialist governments in 1984, curiously.

Se terminó en 1993 y fue consagrada por el papa Juan Pablo II. Hay unas magníficas puertas de bronce que esculpen y dan constancia de este momento.

Tiene un estilo neogótico en su fachada, para no desentonar con el Palacio Real que está frente a ella. Tiene una cripta que fue lo primero que se construyó y es de estilo neorománico, es de pago.
El interior es neogótico.

Lo que mas me llamó la atención fueron los techos. Pinturas de colores muy llamativos con dibujos simétricos no figurativos.

What struck me most were the ceilings. Paintings of very striking colors with symmetrical non-figurative drawings.

En el ábside hay representaciones de escenas de la vida de Cristo y un Pantocrator,

En un estremo de la cruz latina hay un retablo medieval con una talla de la Virgen de la Almudena. Es un altar situado elevado al que se puede llegar subiendo unas escalinatas. En la parte de abajo la sepultura de Maria de las Mercedes, la primera mujer de Alfonso XII y que fue la impulsora y muy devota de la virgen que da nombre a la catedral.

In a corner of the Latin cross there is a medieval altarpiece with a carving of the Virgin of the Almudena. It is an elevated altar that can be reached by climbing some stairs. In the lower part of the tomb of Maria de las Mercedes, the first wife of Alfonso XII and who was the driving and very devoted to the Virgin who gives its name to the cathedral.

La iluminación es mediante grandes vidrieras muy luminosas y coloreadas.
En una esquina, en un recodo que no llama mucho la atención, hay una reliquia del papa Juan Pablo II, una gota de sangre!
Tras el abside hay una capilla con la imagen en bronce del fundador del Opus Dei, Escribá de Balaguer, que también fue muy devoto de esta virgen madrileña.
Hay una suave música ambiental de carácter sacro, muy relajante que nos recuerda que estamos en un templo de meditación y oración.
Difícil lo tiene pues se integra dentro de la ruta mas turística de Madrid.

The lighting is by large stained glass windows, very bright and colored.

After the apse there is a chapel with the bronze image of the founder of Opus Dei, Escribá de Balaguer, who was also very devoted to this Madrilenian virgin.
There is a soft ambient music of a sacred nature, very relaxing that reminds us that we are in a temple of meditation and prayer.
Difficult it is because it is integrated into the most tourist route of Madrid.
