The Korean highway rest area was operated by Korea Highway Corporation at first, but gradually changed to a way of delegating operating rights to private companies. Facilities that sold simple udon or walnut cookies now turn into specialty restaurants, a variety of franchises, and even a range of branded clothing. I myself travel by bus a lot and really enjoy how South Korea's rest stops are almost like a tourist destination stop in itself. You can buy great food, and even souvenirs.
