'Well Of Life'
Well of life is a display of life. The circular sculpture depicts figures in different stages of their life. It is a celebration of life and passion and ends only to start again. This is one of a few best works by Ivan Meštrović, a renowned Croatian sculptor from the of the 20th century.
The figures are as if frozen in motion and very alive. Their bodies are very detailed. Green patina works very well with the soft curves and how they emphasize mild transitions of light to dark. The kissing couple.
Notice how keen he was to get the high level of detail. Rodin's influence is obvious but only influence, nothing more. The very idea of real water, used as a symbol for the energy of life adds another dimension to the sculpture, rendering it very advanced for the period.
Notice that the relief has no straight lines, everything is made with curves.
The sculpture is well incorporated into surroundings and real life flows around it.
The cycle of life ends with the old man looking at his own reflection in the water with grief. However, where something ends, something is bound to start.
Inspired by the cyclical motion of everything around us, Meštrović uses a motif of a baby boy to restart the cycle. And it continues and continues further on, endlessly. A work of a genius, indeed.
Enjoy your day! :-)

I have life difficulties and therefore I do not always have time to write comments. Like this one for example. I do not think you'll see it :)
Until that day I was not familiar with the works of Ivan Meshtrovich. I decided to read more about this man and now I know more about him. This is really a talented person who during his life was able to create real masterpieces of sculpture. Part of his life he did not live in Croatia, but nevertheless he can be considered a man to be proud of his native country. I respect such people and their creativity.
In the photos I see a very realistic work. There really is not a lot of straight lines. This creates an even more realism but at the same time leaves room for reflection and fantasy.
We see the life cycle and water as a symbol of the fluidity of the energy of life. The genius of this sculpture is that she opens her eyes to life. We live the same cycle an infinite number of times. The end of one is the beginning of another. The main thing is to enjoy every cycle of your own existence.
Thanks, that's great.
The statues are works that are long, wide, and tall, and have real / concrete spaces. Work can be seen from all directions, and all sides are intact.
There are two methods in the process of making additive works (add) and subtract (subtract). The art of sculpture is revealed in the form of 3 dimensions. The emotional dimension that the sculptor always develops, the 'depth' of form. In the statue, there is a volume that is dense or empty and can be seen from all angles.
Unlike the reliefs that are also part of the statue, but can only be seen from the front or a little side direction. This is what makes a senior statue that has multi-faceted (multi-surface); face-back, side, top-down, or can also called all, is all, and all down. Thus the art form is the most important and most complex aesthetic.
Wow. Just wow. What an expressive piece of sculpture from an artist I'd never heard of. It's beautiful and your extraordinary photography shows it to great advantage. I particularly like the frame with the 'continuation of life' behind the sculpture. Very nicely done.
Thanks for a lesson. I'm never too old for one!
you are really good and talented person in the world..when i see your post and read the post fully.this tropic describe you clearly.its just mindblowing travelling post.. Everyone should The streets of Zagreb display hundreds of sculptures by renown artists, but this one really can't go unnoticed. Highly expressive figures will certainly grab anyone attention for a minute or two, while you will be trying to understand the otherworldly abilities of the sculptor. Unlike the reliefs that are also part of the statue, but can only be seen from the front or a little side direction. This is what makes a senior statue that has multi-faceted (multi-surface); face-back, side, top-down, or can also called all, is all, and all down. Thus the art form is the most important and most complex aesthetic...thanks to sharing for your qualityfull travelling post.. very well done..my dear friend.. @velimir
This is just to good.. Telling the cycle of man with sculpture... I love the last stage of a old man looking into the water which reflects his life... Some will say the summary of a man is contained in dash between period of birth and death (1992-2018).good write up
The sculpture was explaining the well of life. It was really deep and very meaningful art, where the water was the resource of energy. It amazed me by maintaining i's flow which started from a child and end with an Old.
