Antique theater in Plovdiv. Bulgaria

in #travel6 years ago

In the old town of Plovdiv, besides the architecture of the Renaissance and museums, there is something else to see. For example, Antichan theater

This is one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the world. Near it it gives the impression of luxury and grandeur.

It was built during the time of the Roman emperor Mark Ulpiy Trajan at the beginning of the second century. Spectator seats in this theater look to the south.

The outer diameter of the theater is 82 meters. The theater, unlike the amphitheater, has the form of a semicircle and is intended for theatrical productions and public gatherings. In the theater there are 28 steps-seats, made of marble. The scene has the shape of a horseshoe, a height of 3.16 meters and a diameter of 26.24 meters. I do not see it for the first time, but every time it hits me with its size.

Following the example of the Roman theaters, the places of honor of the Plovdiv Theater are signed. On the seats were written the names of local stewards, important dignitaries and friends of the emperor.

Passage to the stage. There is also an underground one, which goes beyond the stage.

Today this theater is the emblem of Plovdiv and serves for theatrical performances, as well as for concerts, because of the excellent acoustics. The theater accommodates 5,000 - 7,000 spectators.

In the 4th century the theater was partially destroyed due to fires and earthquakes. Opened it during archaeological excavations in 1968.

Гуляя по старому Пловдиву, обязательно зайдите на вершину холма и полюбуйтесь на это красивое и хорошо сохранившееся место.

Historical reference

The history of Plovdiv goes back several millennia ago. Of course, in different periods, this place was called in different ways.

In 342 BC this settlement was ruled by the Macedonian king Philip II, who gave his name to the city - Philipopolis. It is used in various variants to this day.

The degree of preservation is remarkable.

I fell in love with the Roman amphitheatre in Trier,Germany, when I was living in Luxembourg, which was built by Caesar Augustus in the first century, as the city of Trier (Treves) was founded as his summer palace.

In Roman times it was known as Augusta Treverorum.

The amphitheatre there is not as grand, mostly because it is not nearly as well preserved, though it also has wonderful acoustics and hosts concerts and plays on a regular basis.

Hopefully we will get the opportunity to visit the one in Plovdiv one day.

I'm glad you liked it. Come for a visit.

We'll do our best! ;-)

A truly unique place! I love towns like that.
