P. Ramlee: Maestro of Malay Art Education

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Puteh Ramle, has the full name Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh, an artist born in Penang Island Malaysia on March 22, 1929, an actor, singer, comedian, songwriter, screenwriter and film director.

His father Teuku Nyak Puteh Teuku Karim is a sailor from Lhokseumawe, Aceh, settled on Penang Island and later married Che Mah Hussein's widow from Butterworth, Penang state in mainland Malaysia, and later gave birth to a boy named Teuku Zakaria or otherwise known as P. Ramlee.

Malaysia's most beloved and versatile entertainer received his early education in Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa and then the Francis Light School. During the Japanese Occupation he worked in a tin factory and attended a school set up by the Japanese navy, where he learned Japanese songs. In 1945 he entered a singing contest organised by Penang Radio for North Malaya, where he emerged third. He was the runner-up in the following year and the winner in 1947. His first acting role was in Cinta (1948) as a villain. He is believed to have composed about 250 songs. [www.imdb.com].

"On the 8th August 1948, both P. Ramlee and Sukardi boarded a train at Prai for Singapore, and thus began an era in the world of Malay music and film-making - a world of fantasy created by a maestro and enjoyed by millions. All these came to being because a lean pimpled teenager dared to make a date with destiny!". Quoted from the information boards in the P. Ramlee's birthplace house in Penang.

P. Ramlee has an important role in the development of art education for the Malay nation through his phenomenal work. Armed with interest, hobbies and hard work has brought him to the top of popularity as a renowned artist. He has produced enough jobs in a relatively short time, directing films and also being a player, creating songs and singing and can master multiple musical instruments.

Summaries

Based on a Malay folklore, this movie tells the story of Pak Belalang and his son who conspire to portray the latter as an astrologer to help out fellow villagers. The situation gets more complicated when the Penghulu (Mayor) is convinced by his actions and brings him in to the royal palace to help the king in a palace robbery. With some wit and a lot of luck, Pak Belalang manages to pull off his act as an astrologer and even manages to attract the princess. Sourcewww.imdb.com
