George Town and Acheen Street, Penang Island

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

George Town is a historic city on Penang Island, Malaysia set in 2008 as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The atmosphere of a classic building decorates the atmosphere of the city, I think it is a building that is influenced by European style construction because Pinang Island was once in the British colony.

Established as an entrepôt by Francis Light of the British East India Company in 1786, George Town was one of the first British settlements in Southeast Asia. Together with Singapore and Malacca, George Town was governed under the Straits Settlements, which became a British crown colony in 1867. en.wikipedia.org

Pinang Island is a piece of British colony that is originally a Malay nation, the influence of the Chinese community in the past in Pinang Island can still be felt up to now, the Indian community is also part of the cosmopolitan community of Pulau Pinang and the Aceh community had an early influence on the island of Penang.

I first visited there in October 2017, the whereabouts of the community of Aceh in the past proved, but this is not a scientific study, but it can be convinced by the existence of the tomb of the king's son from the Kingdom of Aceh on the back of an ancient building of Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh (Acheen Street Malay Mosque). Acheen, Acheh, Achin, Atjeh, are all words intended for Aceh today.

In front of the mosque in a written pamphlet:
The Acheen Street Malay Mosque was built in 1808 by Tunku Syed Hussain Idid, a wealthy and politically influential Acehnese merchant-prince. The Southeast Asian-style tiered-roof mosque stands in an enclosed compound with historic houses and a Muslim cemetery from the 19th century. The surrounding area was once a centre for the Hajj pilgrimage and spice trade.

Tunku Syed Hussain Idid buried in Lebuh Acheh Pulau Pinang is the crown prince of Aceh King Sultan Alauddin Jauhar ul-Alam Syah (1786-1 December 1823) who ruled in the Kingdom of Aceh.

Tombstone typology Tunku Syed Hussain Idid is consistent with the typology we often encounter in Aceh, it can be ascertained gravestone in the import of the Kingdom of Aceh at that time.
