Found my sweet home Alabammy, Mammy! At least for the night. It's at Geneva State Forest Lake, just a bit south of Opp, aka Middle of Nowhere, South Alabama.

This is a Prime Grade A #vanlife campsite, Pardner. The only fault is it costs money. But at $2 a night, I ain't complainin' none. No, not at all, Sir!

Gorgeous lake! Gorgeous! No swimmin', though, as the alligator warnin' sign makes clear.

Sign reads: No swimming. Beware of alligators.
But the fishin' is supposed to be good, if yer inta that kinda thing. Huntin' in the woods around, too.

There's about five spots here. No electricity nor drinkin' water, so you fancy RV types can skip it. Plus it's about four miles down a slip-sandy dirt road.

But there's trash cans and clean port-a-potties, so it ain't all bad!

Saw Some Cool Stuff on the Way

cotton field
Drivin' in from Mississippi today was a downright pretty drive. Most of it was through hill country with pines. Timber is the big industry in southwest Alabama.

But there was some cotton farms, too. The cotton is high in the fields, just startin' to get harvested.

Was particularly moved by this Veterans Day memorial in Retford, Ala.

veterans memorial of roadside crosses
Along both sides of US 84 on the east side of town, they put crosses for local boys (and girls?) who'd fallen in the line of duty. Each cross has the soldier's name, war, and branch of service.

Oh, nearly ran inta this flock of goddamn Guinea hens! By the time I got the mobile up and camera armed, they was runnin' away like the chickens they ain't. Too bad I couldn't get a good photo. ... The ones that got away, eh?
