Davy Crockett National Forest

in #travel9 years ago
Deserts, high plains, and cities are behind Vanholio! Ahead, the tall southern pine forests. They stretch along the Gulf Coast from the Piney Woods of East Texas to Florida.

And a good thing, too! My DFW visit was nice ... but it was ENOUGH! Enough a cities and their city ways.

Took this top photo yesterday morning by my camp in Davy Crockett National Forest, Texas. That's gonna be my view for weeks as I head to Florida and back.

Good time a year ta visit, too, 'cause the bugs is mostly dead out. Only pests are the damn deer hunters. I keep hearin' gun shots at dusk.

Along the Gulf of Mexico, pines dominate the uplands, with some hardwoods mixed in. Hardwoods hold the creeks, biyous, and bottoms. Where it's really wet, cypress.

Ya start seein' dwarf palmettos, too, down in the wetter areas. That's somethin' you don't see everywhere! Welcome to the subtropics!

This is alligator country, too. So I gotta start watchin' Ms. Barkley near the water's edge. She's a snack-size Chihuaha. Real tasty for a hungry gator.

Don't Shit on Yer Shitter, People!

warning sign in vault toilet not to throw cans and bottles into the hole, or else the vault toilet will get shut down!
By the way, what the fuck is it with people? Every vault toilet I ever seen's got a warnin' – clearly posted! – not to dump bottles, cans, and other trash down the shit hole. Big junk in there makes it hard to pump it out. Some poor asshole usually ends up jumpin' down there to pull out the obstruction.

See this second warning! It was in a vault toilet down at Davy Crockett National Forest, in the White Creek Horse Camp. People, people, people ... This is why we can't have nice things! Pendejos!!!
