A Short Trip to Taiping

We drove down to Taiping the other day. I actually enjoy a short trip in Malaysia like this, driving down to a town in a nearby state, can be quite an experience. So we started out our journey in the afternoon.

Something which I enjoyed in the car. A compilation album of Khalil Fong.

We stopped by at Ipoh to have a cup of white coffee at Nam Heong restaurant. I didn’t know that Old Town Coffee’s white coffee is originated from this restaurant, until that day I read it from someone’s blog. We ordered the Fried Keow Teow from the stall named “Lam Feng” which was recommended by bloggers. The Fried Keow Teow was okay, just that a bit burnt plus it’s not very big plate. It was originated from Penang by the way. ;)

Our Taiping friend suggested a few dinner places for us, and we picked Pasar Siang Malam. It was not very far away from the hotel, plus with the help of GPS, the place was easily located. It’s actually a market, and all the market stalls were closed during nigh time except these stalls which are doing food business.

We could see that nearly each of the stalls were selling nasi lemak bungkus and the price…RM1.20, imagine that. :D So we ordered 2 nasi lemak and a bowl of Yong Tao Fu and then happily enjoyed our dinner. My comment for the nasi lemak is, the sambal was a bit watery and it’s not spicy at all. :P I still prefer spicy sambal. As for the Yong Tao Fu, well, it’s okay except that the soup is a bit salty.

I actually asked my Taiping friend for any food or specialities from Taiping, but she said nope, but suggested Malaysian food which we could try at several places. Below is the list she provided :

  1. Siang Malam
  • go after 9pm
  • Try the Chee Cheong Fan (RM2.00) stall which is facing KFC.
  • Char Keow Teow and Teh Beng.
  1. Jalan Gajah
  • – go after 8pm
  • Char Keow Teow (RM2.70) stall below a big water tank. Fried using charcoal.
  1. Larut Matang Food Court
  • Famous for it’s Mee Rebus, a corner stall facing drinks counter

Guess what, after our dinner, we then only realised there’s another stall selling Nasi Lemak which was at another side of the market place. So we went over the stall and guess what, Stanley decided to take away one packet of the nasi lemak. :D It’s really homecook style. You can ask for the rice and then customise your nasi lemak by choosing your own dishes, and it’s pretty cheap and turned out to be quite okay. :)

As it’s a small town, you probably don’t have a place to visit after dinner. There’s a skybar on the rooftop of Flemington Hotel, the hotel that we’re staying in. The hotel is new and descent, you can choose room which overlooking Taiping Lake, which is a nice view of big green trees and of course the lake. And another thing is, the breakfast and the food in the hotel is good which at first we thought we might be disappointed ordering it’s room service, but end up we’re satisfied with that! ;) Coming back to the Skybar, it has an infinity pool which you can enjoy your swimming up there, and also have your drink on the rooftop, but you won’t really get the night view there. :)

So bad that it’s a brief trip and we don’t get to explore around much. Oh, there’s also a funfair which I wished we could visit, but sadly we just couldn’t accomodate it in our tight schedule. :( Let’s hope that we’ll visit it on our next trip then.
