RE: Photo Series #57: Lake Torre & Glaciar Grande (El Chaltén, Argentina) | Would you swim there?

I wouldn't go so far as to call them phobias. Because i have seen people with actual phobias.

I keep fighting it, by doing stupid things like jumping in a freezing lake or going for treks with 100 feet drops and a few inches to place your feet and a crevice to stuff your fingers in. I have even been for that pseudo rock climbing thingy. I have cycled through some really high mountain passes. But i always go solo or with strangers. Never with friends!

The result on every occasion is my legs turning to jelly and stomach churning. And i still haven't gotten over my fear!

wow that's amazing. Jamie does that too - terrified of heights and sharks, but he still climbs hills for the view and goes surfing.

Thats something interesting to know @twowheeledmonkey. That only happens when with friends? I don't see the relation.
Isn't it, maybe, because I think they'll do something mean, and then it triggers your fear?

First, apologies for making your post appear like a chat room!

Nah, it's probably because I have always been a loner. My first cigarette was bought alone, while my friends rounded up the troops to go buy one cigarette to be shared between the 8 of them. Same was the case with my first bottle of alcohol and even my first porno!!!

Another thing, Indians aren't exactly adventurous. We are brought up to believe that education, career and settling down is the ultimate goal of life. As such, all my friends are walking down that path. While I am as settled as the Titanic after hitting the iceberg!

But the main reason why I don't allow my friends anywhere near my family, other friends or anything is because I have a perpetual target on my back! Even though I am an all round nice guy, with my friends I am an all round arsehole/ bastard! I have played the worst practical jokes on them over the years. From telling one friend's wife that my friend's work trip was actually a visit to Thailand, to another teetotaller friend's parents that their daughter was a raging alcoholic. And thus they would all love their sweet revenge :D
