The Edge of Autumn in Saco and Bidderford; Maine
I left off in my last post meeting up with my mother and brother in Damariscotta on Sunday. We ate at the Damariscotta River Grill and had some wonderful, reasonably priced food for lunch. My mom had one of the best homemade veggie burgers I have ever tasted and my smoked pork was drool inducing. We then saw a bit of fall colors while we walked back to my brothers house.
After we got back to Portland an old friend took me to Orchard Thai in Falmouth. It was such a fun atmoshere with great service and food. She had a chicken curry and I had mussles and beer in a delicious curry broth. We talked about old times, about the floor we worked on together in the hospital and how much things have changed. My friend is so funny and interesting to talk to. Really miss chatting away with her at work.
Last Monday was my last full day with my mother in Maine and we went on another adventure together. It was rainy, so we decided to go for a drive starting in Cape Elizabeth. Our first stop was "The Cookie Jar"
It is one of our little guilty pleasures; it is somehow so magical to drive down to Cape Elizabeth to purchase beautiful treats at a local bakery. Their frosting is delicious.
We then had a magical trip; first by Cape Elizabeth, with its old stone manors on cliffs by the ocean. We noticed the tax bracked decline immediately as we entered Scarborough; but it was full of so much beautiful nature. I did not get photos of the actual drive; my phone camera does not do great driving shots and it was to wet on the way and to dark on the way back to stop.
We took Route 1 through Saco, and stopped first in Bidderford; an old mill town full of fascinating industrial buildings converted into offices galleries, stores and other businesses.
Next we drove back towards Saco and parked nearbye so we could walk around, I liked the energy there. Where as Bidderford is larger and edgier and has more interesting bars and architecture; Saco is prettier and more compact and is in a more natural setting.
At the edge of the downtown area is a trail that leads to a lovely river.
Nearby was a mysterious stone circle.
That night we had pizza and watched videos. I took a plane back to LA the next day. Will miss Maine; hope I can return soon.
(If you like this post, I posted five other times about my adventures in Maine on my blog)
