Casco Bay Islands of Maine
(Pictured: Giants Stairs in Bailey's Island)
One thing I loved about Portland, Maine is that for at least 5 months of the year I could take a bus, car or a ferry to the middle of nowhere and be in nature. One thing I loved the most was traveling to the islands.
The most populated of the Casco Bay Islands is Peaks Island; it boasts a small town center with shops and restaurants. I would often rent a bike and circle the island, picnicing on the quiet beaches and visiting the small museums and shops. These first two pictures I took on my birthday when a friend took me as a present. I sat and drew the cliffs until my butt got sore, then toock a photo for later..
Chebeaque
Another time I went to Chebeaque Island. It is cheaper than a cruise to actually visit the islands; I wonder if these vacationers knew it.
I walked for hours around the island; until my feet were red and blistery; but I saw so much beauty. Wish I had better photos.
Baileys Island is connected by a causeway that goes through several Islands in Harpswell; each with their own unique flavor. I went there one day with my mother and younger brother. We visited Lands End; with it's cool shop and an iconic statue of a lobsterman. Next we took a hike to the Giants Stairs;. I remember we got lunch at one of the seaside shops on the way and ate it parked in the car with a magnificent view around us.
Mackworth Island is also drivable, but has limited seating. I loved to go there with family and enjoy the quiet beaches and lovely trails; stopping to admire or sometimes build houses in the little fairy village by the sea. I can only find images on my old photobucket right now; but you can view them here.
