Switzerland drops all Covid-related entry requirements

in #travel2 years ago

There is yet another country that has had enough with the "papers please!" notion about travel in the world. Even though I don't make anywhere near enough money to actually travel to this nation, it is a wealthy nation and it is nice to see ANY nation that is dropping all requirements for entry.

When this notion first began it was heavily criticized by the nations that like to play "daddy" to the rest of the world. The countries that first dropped all requirements, and the one that never implemented any (Mexico) were lambasted as not caring about the elderly, giving their population a death sentence, and diminishing global health. You know the drill, the usual doom-and-gloom threats. The thing is, none of these things ever happened and once there was proof of this, more wealthy countries started to get on board and this added credibility to the notion that Covid-passes, proof of vaccination, PCR tests, and all other stuff wasn't actually accomplishing very much other than discouraging travel and frustrating passengers.

Thankfully, it seems as though with the addition of Switzerland to the list, more and more nations will probably follow suit.

Switzerland came to the conclusion that Covid is not going away and even though cases continue to pop up, there is no significant risk of death or even serious cases. One government official said "It is unlikely that the SARS-CoV-2 virus will disappear. Instead it is likely to become endemic leading to seasonal waves in the future." There are a lot of people like myself that thought this from the very beginning and as a lover of travel, it was frustrating to me that basically the entire world other than Mexico and a few places that I wouldn't travel to anyway all but completely shut down.

I am a budget traveler so Switzerland never was and likely never will be on my travel itinerary. It has some of the most unique and wonderful scenery of anywhere in the world as well as a "4 seasons" climate that should appeal to most anyone. The downside is that it is one of the most expensive places to travel in all of Europe and the rest of the world as well.

There are a few major cities where it is possible to get dorm beds and this sort of travel doesn't appeal to everyone.
Also, you are likely looking at needing to spend more than $30 a night for a dorm bed with shared bathrooms. To me this is not at all budget-travel. The expense doesn't end there though and the fact that eating out and getting from place to place in Switzerland is going to be quite expensive as well makes this a place that I am unlikely to go to ever.

This is still a call for celebration though because with Switzerland dropping all Covid-related entry and travel restrictions, other countries may take note and follow suit. There are currently 34 countries in the world that have dropped all requirements and I'm hopeful that more will follow.

I was a bit disappointed to see that there are still some Covid rules inside the country but they are limited to mask requirements on public transport and in health care facilities. Fair enough. I think that most people are probably excited to get out to the countryside anyway.

Enough with the madness, planet Earth. It's been more than 2 years!
