Favourite travel apps: accomodation & transport edition

There is an app for everything now and it’s one of the best things to happen for travel. Below are some of my favourite apps for on the road and preparing for your trips.

Accomodation:

Hostelworld: full of budget Hostel, hotels and bed and breakfasts this app is good for the backpackers. Showing exactly how far from the city centre and major attractions every registered business is along with a relevant rating. I use this one for the bigger cities to ensure I am staying close to the hustle and bustle. I have found that in smaller areas many hostels aren’t registered with this app.

Hostelbookers: another great app for backpackers, like Hostelworld it has the whole variety of hostels, hotels and bed and breakfasts. A great feature is the discounts which usually go into affect for the weekends, which can be as high as 40%. This has more options in smaller areas however are usually more expensive.

Bookings.com: bookings usually has the more expensive hotels in the search area. However I have found they have the highest variety when it comes to small towns. Another great feature is the genius account; after booking a certain amount of stays through bookings you get 10% off every hotel with the options for early and late checkout.

Transportation:
Skyscanner: a great flight comparison app and very well known. I book most of my flights through this service as there are always budget flight companies with sales on. With the monthly flight comparisons it’s great to see the best flight days in a month if you have the flexibility.

Rome2rio: a great app which compares flights, buses, trains and ride shares from one destination to the other. It shows time frame, price range and if there are any route changes. Once choosing the best route for your trip you can go direct to the carriers website to book tickets if need be. The only downside to this website I have found is that sometimes the websites do not have an language option and translating can be tricky. In some instances you need to renter the information as well when booking tickets through this app.

GoEuro: this is the European version of Rome2rio in that it compares flight, buses and trains however tickets can be booked direct with this app and tickets saved to your device. This is great to as there is no need to translate websites or renter information. However as tickets are bought through the app not every website and transport option is available as they need to be registered with app. I always use a combination of Rome2rio and GoEuro when booking international tickets.
