TRAVELMAN NEPAL: I Stayed at the Historic Kathmandu Guest House!

in #travel7 years ago

On my last two nights in KTM I decided to treat myself and stay at the KTM Guest House. In KTM this is luxury and living in style. In the US, the facilities would equate to a Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn. My room was forty USD a night...

For sixty USD a night I could’ve had A/C and a slightly better room. FYI, when places in Nepal and India say they have A/C it means both air conditioning for cooling and air for heating....

My first room was smaller and had pigeons roosting outside of it. In the morning, workmen were pounding hammers in the rooms below me. I asked for a different room. They gave me the same type of room in the other building. It was slightly larger, but the bathroom wasn’t quite as nice. It was still great, but not as new.

They had this great courtyard where you could sit by the fire and have some masala tea or an expensive Belgium beer with your dinner...

The Guest House was the first guest house in Thamel, it made Thamel happen. It’s where all the travelers stayed in the sixties. A big claim to fame is that George Harrison is rumored to have stayed there, although they have no official record of it.

This is some of the tastiest and the most expensive Dal Bhat Thali I had in Nepal. They also call it the Nepali Set....

The guy on the other side of that fire had just completed the Annapurna Circuit. He was in his fifties and a nurse in Australia. He had once worked in the Aborigines in Australia. I talked to him and an old British guy who lived in a remote Canadian Village where he taught. Interesting dinner and drinks conversation...

The room that they moved me too. Another FYI, I read on a website a couple months ago that you should always ask to have your room changed after checking into a decent hotel. The article claimed that you will always get a better room even if it’s not an official upgrade. This isn’t something to try at the Motel 6, but it worked like a charm at the KTM Guesthouse. I didn’t like my room, they moved me, and it was a much better room. They want to make sure you’re happy...

The only thing I didn’t like was that they had these tiny twin beds in my level of room, there was no queen size option...

A large breakfast buffet was included with the room. Travelman loves a good Hotel Buffet and this one fit the bill...

The room was decorated with Beatles posters. They really play up the Beatles connection...

This is the Barber that cut my hair twice. It’s a five dollar haircut! He’s an artist. He gives you a neck and scalp, and eyeball massage, cracks your neck, and takes great care in the haircut. This would have been an eighty dollar cut in Los Angeles.

He cut my hair in December and the last day I was there. Apparently, barbers like this guy are a thing in KTM. He had pictures with customers on his walls. I think some were famous climbers. He’s giving the Zoolander Blue Steel gaze like in this one in every photo...

This is the view from the window of my room. It’s a back alley behind Thamel. I could’ve sat and stared at the activity for hours...

If you’re ever in KTM, I highly recommend giving yourself a night at the Guest House. Something about it, the history, I guess, makes it feel special. And the food and service are fantastic. Good wifi too...

Travelman log, day 211 I missed that Yoga class because I couldn’t find toilet paper, wasn’t able to buy any until after it started. !steemitworldmap 27.7131 lat 85.3093 long . Dal Bhat Power!!!

The contrast between Kathmandu's bustling city and the serenity of the himalayas gives Nepal it's unique character.

Great Post! Keep up the good work!

Wow, nice shots...Looks like you are having a blast!

Have you encountered any Sadhus in Kathmandu?

I hope you got rid of the respiratory infection by now. Sending you all my love and big bear hugs via Nepal Airlines.

Ive seen quite a few beggars dressed like one would expect a Saddhu to dress in Nepal and India. Not sure how many were just plain beggars though. Still feeling rundown but better. This is my new second travelman account i just got btw

Well that's a bummer 😄
