TRAVELMaN ENGLAND: A Little Southern Town by the Name of Totnes

The Train to Buckfast Abbey, the monastery where I planned to live with Benedictine monks for three days, dropped me in the town of Totnes. It was about a twenty minute bus ride to Buckfastleigh and the Abbey.

I had forty minutes until the next bus so I walked around..

There were a lot of tourists, and children coming home from school. Everything gave me the impression that there was a lot of money in the community.

A time when I wish I had a real zoom, the countryside in the background, and a very country English grandfather (think Old Spice commercial) walking his grandkids home from school...

The streets were narrow and winding, as though built before or in spite of cars...

The town had a lot of quaint shops. Don’t you worry tourists! We have plenty of places for you to window shop and say, “Well isn’t that darling!” (I did hear a woman say this).

I was disappointed to discover that Totnes is not from where tote bags come. Live and learn ...live and learn.

I don’t know if he knows Sam the Butcher. (As I type that, I realize that in today’s day and age “Sam the Butcher” sounds very macabre rather than like someone your wisecracking housekeeper dates.)...

This isn't Buckfast Abbey, but it's a church on top of the hill that I could see all the way from the train station...
