TRaVELMAN DUBAI: Bastikiya Historical Neighborhood, DUBAI
Al Bastikiya is a historic neighborhood in Dubai. It dates back to the 1890’s. According to my friend Wikipedia, half of it was torn down in the 80’s. Then a big shot architect moved into one of the buildings in the other half, renovated it, wrote a letter to Prince Charles, the Prince visited, the Prince thought it should be preserved, and now it’s a place with a cultural center, a coffee museum, some coffee shops and eateries, art, and art galleries everywhere.
Perfect for Travelman, being how cultured and refined I am... Burp. Fart. Scratch.
You can taker the tram there and exit the green line at Al Fahida.
On the walk there after exiting the tram, I saw this building with a giant golf ball on top of it...
This is the roundabout in front of it....
There’s a series of narrow streets between the buildings. It’s a small area, about the size of a block in the suburbs...
I think that portrait in the background is of the King. I think the king’s name is Zayed because there are banners everywhere bearing his face and they say 2018 The Year of Zayed...
Courtyard outside the coffee museum...
Coffee museum...
That guy on the bench is a life-like animatronic robot that explains the history of Arabic coffee... I assume.
An antique meth lab inside the museum. -I could be wrong about that, Again, I’m just going on assumptions. Plus, a lot of people are saying that President Trump said, “I hear a lot of people saying they’re keeping antique meth kitchens in Dubai.” And he never lies or makes shit up.
Coffee shop upstairs...
This was a coffee shop/gallery/ interactive art project place...
Don’t worry, the camel is paper-mache. There’s not an actual camel wrapped in newspaper- Again, I assume.
This one is a camel statue, or a very un-life-like actual camel who has been trained in camel obedience school to stand very still when people are watching...
Another cool cafe/gallery/hotel...
Mural on a side of a building on the street...
And there was this place, a cultural foundation with numerous rooms showcasing local artist who are either from the UAE or living here. I posted pics of their names and blurbs about them first, and the art last. You can figure out the matching like it’s a game...
My friend from yoga school who lives in Abu Dhabi suggested I visit here and it was an excellent suggestion. The most culture I’ve experienced in Dubai before this was talking to my safari driver about his Kundara and how many pockets they have.
