Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh was historically known as the Awadh region. Today, it is the administrative headquarters of Lucknow District and Lucknow Division. Fondly known as the ‘City of Nawabs’ or the ‘City of Tehzeeb’, it has always been a city filled with varied cultures.

Its beautiful sprawling gardens, polite mannerisms, fine-cuisine, music, and poetry (Shayari), had found a patronage in the Shia Nawabs of the city who loved Persian.

The city has been given various other names too, such as The Constantinople of India, Shiraz-i-Hind and the Golden City of the East.

Today, it is known as one of the most important cities of the country which is now emerging in various sectors like retailing, manufacturing and commercial.

Lucknow city has to offer a unique feature to its travelers, which is a perfect combination of its rich traditions and the modern growth of new-mannerisms. The same is its USP. After Kanpur, it is the second largest city of Uttar Pradesh.

A good thing About Lucknow is it has both Ola and Uber now I traveled by Uber during my whole stay and it was really good experience as the drivers were good, There cars were clean and well maintained And best part is there was no shortage of taxis at any point in Lucknow.

The Local Bus Service

It covers the entire city and is used by daily commuters. Lucknow City Transport Service Ltd. has 15 A/c, 30 Non A/c low Floor Marcoplo Buses, 90 Tata Buses And 125 Mazda Buses, totaling 260. These types of buses have been very successful in Lucknow it is liked by all sections of commuters it is liked very much for environment friendly, easy, comfortable & safe transportation by daily commuters like office goers, students, senior citizen and ladies.

The Autorikshaw

An Autorickshaw is a small vehicle that has one seat in the front for the driver and a larger seat at the back for passengers. The autorickshaw is capable of accommodating around four people at a time. These are available round the clock and anywhere in the city. It is always better to bargain the cost before boarding the vehicle. If the driver agrees to charge by the meter, it is an even better option.

Lucknow is situated on the northern part of India in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It faces some extremities in temperature in summers and winters. The climatic conditions of Lucknow vary in different seasons and there is much difference in summer and winter temperature. Lucknow basically experiences a warm sub-tropical kind of climate. Summer
Summers are pretty hot and last from April to July. The temperature ranges from 30o Celsius to 45o Celsius and it can get really hot in the month of June. Hot dry winds called Loo make the temperatures go really high and it can get very uncomfortable during afternoons. Summers are usually hot and dry with occasional thunderstorms.

Monsoons
The monsoons last from July to September and Lucknow receives its share of rainfall from the southwest monsoons. On an average, Lucknow receives 101 centimeters of annual rainfall. It becomes quite humid after September and sometimes the temperatures may escalate due to the humidity. The evenings are pleasant with cool winds blowing thus reducing the night temperatures a bit.

Winters
Lucknow experiences cool and dry winter months. Winters usually extend from December to February and the temperatures go really low. The temperature ranges from 20 Celsius to 3 Celsius. It is not uncommon for Lucknow to be enveloped in thick fog during winter mornings and the visibility can literally go down to nil. Winters can be bone chillingly cold so it is recommended that you carry thick woolen clothes with yourself.

From 1350 onwards, Lucknow and parts of the Awadh region were ruled by the Delhi Sultanate, Sharqi Sultanate, Mughal Empire, Nawabs of Awadh, the British East India Company and the British Raj. Lucknow was one of the major centres of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and actively participated in India’s independence movement, emerging as a strategically important North Indian city. Until 1719, the subah of Awadh was a province of the Mughal Empire administered by a Governor appointed by the Emperor. Persian adventurer Saadat Khan, also known as Burhan-ul-Mulk, was appointed Nizam of Awadh in 1722 and established his court in Faizabad, near Lucknow.

01 Bara Imambara

The Bara Imambara was built in the year 1784 by the fourth Nawab of Awadh known as Asaf-ud-Daula. It was built as a part of a relief project for a major famine that took place in the year 1784. The Bara Imambara of Lucknow is one of the most famous monuments of this place. It is also called Asfi Imambara after the name of the Nawab of Lucknow who got it constructed. It is an important place of worship for the Muslims who come here every year to celebrate the religious festival of Muharram.

The Bara Imambara has a unique style of construction. The central hall of Bara Imambara is said to be the largest arched hall in the world. The hall measures 50 meters long and goes upto a height of 15 meters. What makes the construction unique is the fact that the blocks have been put together with interlocking system of bricks and there has been absolutely no use of girders and beams. The roof stands steady till date without any pillars to support it.

The Bara Imambara is known for its incredible maze called Bhulbhulaiya. This is located in the upper floor of the monument. A stairway leads to this level. One can view a scenic panorama of the city from the top of this monument, which is absolutely breath-taking. The Bhulbhulaiya is a must see and the best way to find your way out without getting lost is by hiring a guide. It is said that great treasures are hidden in the secret tunnels of this maze. The monument remains open from morning 6am to evening 5pm.


02 Chota Imambara

The Chhota Imambara, or the Imambara of Hussainabad is one of the most beautiful and attractive buildings in the old city. The imposing monument lies to the west of Bara Imambara. Chota Imambara was a congregation hall for Shia Muslims built by Muhammad Ali Shah, the third Nawab of Awadh in 1838 and was to serve as his own mausoleum and his mother’s, who is buried beside him. This 19th century building is also known as the palace of lights because of its decorations and chandeliers during special festivals

Chota Imambara is often touted as the most prominent historical structure of Lucknow by many locals. Architecturally, it is a wonderful amalgam of Charbagh, Indo-Islamic and Persian structural designs. The sheer brilliance of Chota Imambara during the festive season at night time gets imprinted on the mind of visitors.

A hot spot of photo fanatics and history buffs, Chota Imambara, attracts a large number of tourists every year. Even the interiors are designed and maintained with intricate details and utmost care.


03 Chowk Lucknow

Chowk is a popular market in central Lucknow, located about three km from Bara Imambara. One of the oldest markets in the city, it comprises of inter-connected narrow streets, with small shops selling chikan garments, ittar and ornaments. The market still maintains its old charm and is best for buying chikankari cloths and antique items. You can shop for quality chikan embroidered materials as it is the hub of chikan garment manufacturers. Besides this, the market has also risen to prominence as a centre of handicrafts. You can shop for beautifully-carved ivory items having flowers, leaves and birds motifs. Master craftsmen create intricate items, such as lampshades, knives and toys that look marvellous. Other local specialities include ittar made with flowers, zardozi embroidered garments and handmade nagra footwear.


04 Aminabad Market

Aminabad is a large bazaar located in the heart of Lucknow, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The main product is chikan embroidered garments.The Aminabad Bazaar of Lucknow has operated since the time of the Nawabs of Awadh. Aminabad is made.Since the time of Nawabs, the market boasts of its unmatched fashion, and being one of the oldest markets, it is still surrounded by buildings and architectures of nawabi era.As the day breaks, the streets of Aminabad are glittered with the sequins and colors of silk and muslin.


05 Hazratganj

Hazratganj is a major shopping area situated in the heart of Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. In addition to bazaars, it also contains shopping complexes, restaurants, hotels, theaters and offices.

In 2010, to celebrate 200 years of Hazratganj, the then government, started a programme for the makeover of the area. The original makeover plan designed by country’s noted architect Nasir Munjee several years ago worked as the base for the final plan that entailed an expense of Rs 30 crore.

Hoardings from rooftops and encroachments on the road were removed. Buildings were painted in a uniform crème and pink, same size and colour signages, stone pavements and the Victorian style balustrades, lamp posts, waste-bins, benches, an open air tiny amphitheater and colourful fountains were constructed. The century old Fire Station was demolished to make way for the modern multi-level parking.


06 Lucknow Zoo

ocated in the heart of Lucknow, the Nawab Wazid Ali Shah Prani Udyan or Lucknow Zoo is a favourite haunt of wildlife enthusiasts from all over the city. This massive zoo is spread over an area of 71.6 acres and was established in the year 1921 to commemorate the visit of His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales to Lucknow. It was formerly known as the Prince of Wales Zoo but was later renamed after. Some of the fascinating animals and birds such as Royal Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Lion, Wolf, Great Pied Hornbill, Golden Pheasant and Silver Pheasant can be spotted here in their natural habitat.

In addition to being a safe house for animals such as Hoolock Gibbon, Himalayan Black Bear, Indian Rhinoceros, Blackbuck, Swamp Deer, Barking Deer and Hog Deer, the Lucknow Zoo also has a number of fun-filled activities for its visitors. You can observe the vintage train that is exhibited in the zoo premises, and if that leaves you wanting for more, hop aboard the toy train that runs through the zoo! The State Museum displaying artifacts from Awadh is also situated in the Lucknow Zoo. In addition to these, several events such as Wildlife Week and Children’s day Celebration are regularly held here as well.


07 janeshwar Mishra Park

Created in memory of late politician Janeshwar Mishra, Janeshwar Mishra Park is an urban park located in the Gomti Nagar of Lucknow. It was opened to the public in 2014 and is said to be Asia’s largest garden. Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) developed this eco-friendly park and conceptualized and designed it as a multi-functional environmental and recreational green space which provides a sustainable habitat for various species of birds. It also supposedly doubles up as a major entertainment and recreational center for the society. The park aims to enhance and improve the ecological balance and help restore sensitive habitat for many organisms like birds, small animals, fishes, amphibians and insects. The gently sloping park falls under the green belt of the Lucknow city and will act as a mini-forest.
