'The Simpsons' is, without a doubt, one of the most successful series in the history of television. Since its humble premiere in 1987, the series has grown and matured into a parody of American society and the world we live in. The adventures of the family created by Matt Groening conquered the public practically from the minute one and have kept us glued to the television for more than three decades. At that time, one of the great mysteries of the series was the exact location of the city of Springfield. As if it were the route to El Dorado, the followers waited until the path was discovered.

And came none other than Matt Groenning himself, who revealed in an interview published in Smithsonian that the Springfiled on which he relied to create the series is the one in the state of Oregon, where he was born. Throughout the United States there are 35 cities with the name of Springfield, and Matt Groening thought that "it would be fun if there were many people who felt identified with the name of the city." The series itself has been responsible for provoking the fans and maintaining the mystery, since whenever the location of Springield was mentioned something interrupted or blocked it.

Matt Groening grew up in Portland, 180 km from the city of Springfield in his native Oregon. The author confessed that, as a child, the television series 'Father Knows Best' also happened in a city called Springfield and he was excited by the idea that it was the one that was so close to his house. In addition, his own family served as inspiration for the characters of the series: his father is called Homer, his mother Margaret and his sisters Lisa and Maggie.

What differences and similarities are there between reality and fiction?

It seems obvious that the Springfield created as a place of residence for the yellow family will differ with the town in which Groening was inspired. The needs of script and the crazy events that advance the chapters have modified the characteristics of the city to the taste of the writers and without even trying to disguise it. However, there is always the feasible doubt that the places that we have visited so many times through the screen or the pages of a book really exist.

The Springfield of Oregon is a small town with just over 60,000 inhabitants, with no nuclear power plant or access to the sea. The Springfield of the Simpsons, as they say in the series itself, would have about 30,000 inhabitants and depending on the chapter, would be an interior city with a nearby lake or a coastal town. Similarly, the date of creation of the city differs considerably between both cases: the Oregon was founded in 1848 after the arrival of the Briggs family and was recognized as a city in 1885, while the Simpsons was founded by Jebediah Springfield (the bloodthirsty pirate Hans Sprungfeld) in 1796. While in the Springfield of the series live famous and quite more bizarre characters such as Krusty the clown, Kent Brockman, the actor Rainier Wolfcastle or the magnate Montgomery Burns; Oregon Springfield has been the home of writer Ken Kessey, Olympic athlete Bill Dellinger or congressman Peter DeFazzio.
