4x4 offroad racing, jumping and crashing!

in #travel9 years ago

Every few months there are outdoor race events held. Some are in Bangkok at dedicated recreation tracks while others are in the nearby provinces. These tracks are changed to cater for either four wheeling or enduro/motocross events. Visiting with a few friends, i was expecting a quiet practice day for 4x4s. It was quite the opposite.

People seemed rather relaxed as vehicles raced around what seemed to be the most inconvenient race track. There didn't really seem to be any skill in the driving, just whose truck could survive the longest!

This old red truck nose dived upon landing. There was a moment of balance before the truck toppled over. A reinforced cab offered sufficient protection for the drivers.

The rain deterred me from flying my drone, so instead I dug out my rarely used DSLR. Most of these shots are taken through an 18-200mm Nikon zoom lens. Close up shots have been taken with a wide angle 10-20mm Sigma lens.

regular street legal trucks took part too. After a walk around later I noticed that many of these trucks only had modified suspension, while the chassis and vehicle structure were still standard.

Boggy areas tempted the drivers to hit the muddy water as hard as they could to ensure they made it through. For the smaller buggy style 4x4s, technical courses had been marked out. All fitted with snorkels for the deep water and winches to assist with the steep exit inclines.

Each event or round actually seemed very slow. There was a lot of stopping and crawling over obstacles. To balance this out, there were a few long stretches which had ramps and jumps. Black exhaust smoke often filled the air and I am sure the track was littered with broken parts.

My feet were soaked as these 2 trucks plowed through the water and the wave washed up- at least I got 2 photos out of it.

Although #72 was first out of the water ditch, it broke down a few bends along. Gears could be heard crunching with no movement. They gave up!

Heading back i spotted the only clean 4x4 buggy. It hadn't been driven but had a huge FOR SALE sign on the side of it. Tempting!

First two photos are funny...Guy sitting on chair is just watching truck rolling over like he see it every day. Maybe he works there, so it is scene he see every day :P

I was thinking the same. He sat there the whole time just watching, even when people started running over lol. He was a marshal- guess it wasn't in his job description.
