Sea Snake in the Shallows of Bunaken, Indonesia
Snaaaake! It's a snaaaake! And it's not just any snake: it's a banded sea krait, one of the most venomous snakes on the planet!
(snake shows up around the 1:10 mark)
Luckily for us, sea snakes are non-aggressive to humans provided they aren't threatened or provoked, so filming this little guy with a close-up was no problem. Unlike eels, sea snakes are reptiles and therefore must return to the surface periodically for a breath of fresh air. When diving around the Coral Sea, you have to keep an eye up for the thin ribbon-like profile of a sea snake swimming up to the surface.
The shallows around the cinder cone of Palau Manadotua in Bunaken National Park are packed full of stunning hard corals and huge schools of vibrant fish. The easy descent sloping descent in this video marked the start of an incredible wall drift dive full of insane cross currents that, frankly, went from quite chill to pretty scary in a matter of minutes. We had to exit the dive near a forming whirlpool!
Worth it!
