European Travels - Portugal (Lisbon - Part One)
My good lady and I were fortunate enough to spend a few weeks travelling around Portugal. As part of a Travel series I will be doing a blog for each region we travelled through. We spent the most time in Lisbon, the Portugal capital. There is so much to the city that I will need to break it into two or three parts.
From that excellent publication Wikipedia....
Lisbon (/ˈlɪzbən/; Portuguese: Lisboa [liʒˈboɐ] (About this soundlisten))[2] is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 505,526[1] within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km2.[3] Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.8 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union.[4] About 3 million people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, including the Portuguese Riviera, (which represents approximately 27% of the country's population).[5] I

We visited a few old castles as well as numerous chapels. The mix of Roman and Moorish influences is evident in the architecture.
The roof arches were influenced by the MoorsSome more from Wikipedia ...
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the oldest in Western Europe,
predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris, and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal.

The chapels are adorned with intricate wood carvings
We end with my lady on watch ..... more like an Instagram moment.
In the next post ...Part Two I would like to cover the geography and the cuisine. Cuisine being something very close to my heart and taste buds.
As always thank you for stopping by
