Exploring the Adriatic Sea #2 - Ulcinj

in #travel8 years ago

During my recent journey through Montenegro, I could not resist the desire to visit one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast, Ulcinj.

Montenegro's southernmost city, has always attracted people from all over the world because of its natural beauty.
Ulcinj is a wonderful oasis, a place for relaxation, fun and possess everything a man could want for a pleasant summer holiday.

The best known of all the beaches in Ulcinj Riviera is kilometers long (12 km) and covered with fine sand Long Beach, which is considered the most beautiful beach in Montenegro. It is the longest beach on the Montenegrin coast, and one of the longest in Europe.
Upon arrival in the city, my friends and I straight away went to the beach where we enjoyed basking in the sun, swimming and playing beach volleyball. Staying there was a special experience during the whole day.

As the day was winding down we went to the town where we had a nice meal in the restaurant. Since our stomachs were full, it was difficult to go on, but charmed by the beauty of Ulcinj, we headed for a leisurely afternoon walk in exploring the city.

For already 25 centuries Ulcinj keeps traces of civilizations that make the city so special and mystique.
Ulcinj Castle, also known as Ulcinj Old Town, is an ancient castle built by the Illyrians and Ancient Greeks on a small peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Many civilizations through history have been settled on this site from Byzantinians, Serbs, Venetians and Ottomans. The Old Town were often destroyed in wars, and rebuilt many times by their residents. Narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Town are surrounded by centuries-old buildings.
According to belief, the famous Miguel de Cervantes was captured for five years in the old town and there he found inspiration for his famous work "Don Quixote".

There is also a beach called Small Beach located in the center of town much smaller in size, but very popular for visitors.

The modern city of Ulcinj was built outside of this castle.
Today mostly inhabited by Albanians, Ulcinj is the center of the Albanian community in Montenegro.
