NAVY PIER

Navy Pier was built under nationally-known architect Charles Sumner Frost based on Daniel Burnham's “Master Plan of Chicago.” and opened to the public in 1916 as “Municipal Pier”. ... Navy Pier once housed a prison for draft dodgers during World War I. “Municipal Pier” was renamed “Navy Pier” in 1927 as a tribute to the Navy personnel who served in the war.

Navy Pier has been a Chicago icon and popular destination throughout much of its history.
Chicago added an entry to the history of the Ferris wheel when Navy Pier's $3.2 million ride opened June 23, 1995, standing 150 feet tall.
The original Ferris wheel, more than 100 feet taller, was built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
The new wheel rises 196 feet height, almost 50 feet taller than the current wheel. Still, the new wheel is 68 feet shorter than the original Ferris wheel.
